“The Consummation of Empire” by Thomas Cole

This is the full-size picture of the painting appearing on the weblog. The American artist Thomas Cole laid out the rise and fall of an unidentified but seemingly Greco-Roman empire in an epic series of imaginary landscape paintings, “The Course of Empire.” Painted from 1833 to 1836, the series has long been considered one of the most crucial works of 19th-century American art. What is Cole expressing with this painting? For example, what is the significance of the scale of the people in relation to the objects in the painting?

  1. In my time log I found that I spent about 25% on some sort of media. I don’t agree with the article that practicly every waking minute, when not in school, is spent using an electronic device. I do a lot more activites, such as playing my musical instruments, playing soccer, riding my bike, and having talks with my family- even though i enjoy the radio. I don’t think that constant use of any, or all ,media, as the article clams, can be positve in any way. When I stayed away from media all day, I did some out door activites and took the train to Westfeild. I did not have a problem staying away from media.

  2. 1.I realized that I use a lot of media through out a day. I think the main reason for this is because I am always texting. Also I have my own computer so I have more time that I can go on the computer. I use media for homework also so that takes up a lot of time using media. I have a facebook and I use that to socalize with friends so I go on that if I need to talk to someone. Sometimes I use the media just for fun if I want to play a game or something.
    2. I think that i don’t use media as much as the artical was saying. A few of my friends are always using media. It positivly affects them because it is a way of socializing and also being able to have time to do homework because they are not walking around talking to the person, they would be at home texting them and in between text they are doing the homework they need to be doing. The media is also a negitive because it is more time for them to be doing something other then doing homework like if they where on facebook they might not be paying attention to what they are righting down on their paper.
3.When I didn’t use media I went outside more and was a lot more active. Not using media gave me a lot more time to spend with my family. The time that I spent with my family I would have most likely to have been on the computer or texting someone. I realized that media isnt that important. Also that day I went outside and played soccer and lacrosse with my dad and brother. We spent a lot of family time together. Which I enjoyed spending that time with my family.
    4. I think if the day I didn’t use media was raining it I would have done homework. I probubly would have spent more time studing and taking my time on my homework and I would probubly even organize my binders. I think that my homework would have been done with more effort because it would have been easier to stay focussed. There would have been no noise around me so I could focuss on the question being asked not the tv or the computer or the phone. But it was really nice out so I went outside.
    5. I was successful. The only time that I used media was when I called my mom because she needed to know where I was. Other then the one phone call I was pretty successful. I didnt think that I would have been that successful. I think that it was hard to make it through the day without media but if I was asked to do it again I would!
6.The media free day for me was a lot different then I thought it would be. I thought it would have been harder then it actually was. It was a lot easier then I think a lot of people where expecting. I use media everyday and to go a day without it is really good. I actually think that it was kind of fun.
