Media Madness?

Your assignment over the next week is to focus on the extent to which you use media. After keeping your log of your media usage on a typical non-school day and spending a day without media, please post your responses to the questions below in a substantive paragraph. Your response should be posted by Monday, Nov. 28.

Try to respond to these questions for your blog response:

  • After completing the timelog, how much time did you find that you spent using media?
  • The article that is part of this assignment notes that our youth spend “practically every waking minute” when not in school using a cellphone, computer, television, mp3 player, video console, or other electronic device. If this is true of you, how do you think such heavy media use is affecting you or your friends — both positively and negatively?
  • What did you do differently on the day you stayed away from media?
  • Did you find that you were more productive completing homework on the day you stayed away from media?
  • How successful were you at staying away from media?
  • How did your “withdrawal” from media make you feel?

  1. 1.I found that after completing the timeline, I use a lot more media than I thought I would. I never really thought that doing homework and listening to the music counted as using media. I found that little things, like texting my friends, took up so much of my time.
2.I think that my freinds are affected by the media I use. Sometimes when walking to school, I will begin to sing a song and the rest of them will join in, showing an obvious sign that we all like music. On the other hand, I find that I am constantly pulling out my phone when I am talking to my friends to see who texted me, and I imagine that they find that rude.
3.On the day that I did not use media, I did not use my phone or my ipod, so things were difficult for me. I went to bed early cause I had nothing else to do. I read a lot, since it was pouring the whole day and I couldn’t go outside.
    4. I did find that I was more productive completing homework while not using the media, which I was surprised about alot because I always thought that it helped me more, but I guess not.
5.I was pretty successful at staying away from the media on the no media day. At times I really wanted to see who was texting me when my phone buzzed, but I promised myself to not use it.
6.The withdrawl from media made me feel extremely sorry for the kids who don’t use media because of a homework assisngment, but don’t use media becuase they don’t have the money to afford it. I realize that it is harder thatn it may seem in many ways, and I gues it would not affect us at all if we had not grown up with it as much, like our parents.

  2. 1.) After completing the timeline, I realized that I spend about 5-7 hours with media. I kind of expected to spend about 5 hours with media because I use my computer a lot. I didn’t really realize that listening to music is, in fact, using media because music is something you listen to, not watch.

2.) I wouldn’t call myself a heavy media user, however, I do use media often. 5-7 hours is average for someone my age. I think that using media has both a positive and negative affect on both me and my friends. Everyone can learn new things from media. They can also improve on old things. They can also be entertained by using media (that’s the whole point of media.) But you must pay the price of your brain getting hurt.

3.) Well, living a life without media is a bit rough. So I read a lot of books and magazines. On the day I went without media, the weather was pretty good, so I shot some hoops and did a bit of soccer practice. I also went for a jog to Westfield Station and back to my home. I was pretty tired after all that exercise. Exercise is one of the better things you can do without media.

4.) I found that I was a bit more productive completing any homework I had. However, I didn’t find a significant improvement. This is mostly because I never use any media while I do homework.

5.) As I said before, it was a bit rough to go through an entire day without media. However, in the end, I made it through the day. The day went by pretty slowly without media. But when I played some sports and went for a jog, time flew by, since I was having fun.

6.) The “withdrawal” from media wasn’t easy to do, however, you get use to it. For example, when Hurricane Irene passed by, my power was our for the entire day. This happened again when the snow storm came. Both days, I had no media to use. This “withdrawal” from media made me realize how people who can’t afford computers, music players, cell phones, etc., live their lives. The generation before us was probably not affected at all by media because back then, all they had was the radio!

  3. 1) After completing the time log, I realized I am never away from the media. The only time of the whole day I wasn’t away from the media was when I was eating lunch, dinner, or dessert. Even when I sleep, I listen to music and when I wake up it is still on. While I was setting the table, cleaning the house, making dinner, dessert, and appetizers for Thanksgiving, I was listening to music. I guess I can say I really love music. Normally I don’t watch TV, only on certain nights when my favorite show is on. However, Thanksgiving is probably the one day of the year when I watch it a ton. I watched the Packers vs. Lions and the Dolphins vs. Cowboys game with my family (we are a big football family). Then, we watched a movie, so that’s about 10 hours of TV right there. I really need to get away from these habits, and the day without media really helped me push that goal forward.
    2) Heavy media use does affect my friends and I, but I think that it affects us in a positive way. Music, TV, movies, the computer, and texting. connects others together, at least in my friend group it does. Songs get stuck in our heads, and as one person starts to sing it out loud, all the others join in, and it’s really fun. Also, we share favorite artists, and we talk about them all the time. In addition, we always discuss TV together. We discuss who got voted off our favorite reality shows, our reactions to events that occurred on a show, and so on. Next, the computer allows us to hear about news in the world, like media news and world news, and we can connect through reactions to this news that we hear from the computer. Sometimes we debate over topics in the media, which I enjoy (hearing the opinions of others). It sparks good conversation. Last but not least, texting is great for relationships. You can talk to your friends while you’re away from them, even if they’re on the other side of the world! The only thing bad about texting is that it can cause friends to get into a fight with one another. All in all, the media is positive in my group of friends, except for texting, which could lead to a fight.
    3) The day I stayed away from the media was Wednesday. On that day, I started to prepare for Thanksgiving, did some of my homework, read a book, and played outside.
    4) Yes, I was more productive completing my homework because I didn’t have anything to distract me. However, I wasn’t able to listen to music while I was doing my homework, like I usually do, but, I was still more productive in doing my homework, anyway.
    5) I was very successful at staying away from the media. I was very tempted to use media, especially because my sister had the TV on most of the afternoon, but I still managed to keep away from it. I did struggle though the day, which I’m not proud of, but, I am proud of myself for making it through the whole day.
    6) My “withdrawal” from the media made me feel fantastic. I am so glad I had this experience. At first, I didn’t know what I was going to do without the media, but once I experienced a day without it, I felt so productive, so energetic, and so proud of myself of making it through the day. Honestly, this project really changed my lifestyle and now I’m going to try my best to reduce the media I use.

    1) After completing the time log I found out I spent 10 hours using media. I did not expect that I would be using media for 10 hours, I thought it would only be about 5 hours because I use the computer a lot, I didn’t realize texting is part of media because you don’t watch texting you just read a message and answer back. I also had a lot of people over my house so I was tempted to see what they were doing with media.
    2) Media affects everybody; the article is right well at least for me. I’m always texting and if I’m not texting I’m listening to music. Such heavy media affects my friends and I because we are constantly using media. Even if we are walking from one house to the other we are listening to music or texting. Although, media can teach us a lot, half our homework the media is needed for, at least 3 nights a week we are asked to use computer to complete the homework.
    3) I didn’t do much differently. I didn’t even plan to have a non-media day, until the end of the day I realized all I did was call my mom and go to the mall. It was black Friday so I was more focused on shopping then I was on catching up on the news fed on Facebook. It was very hard because toward the end of the day when I realized I was doing a media free day, my phone was ringing. I wanted to answer the text messages but I couldn’t.
    4) I didn’t have any homework to complete. But on a normal school day I would not be productive to complete my homework, because half my homework requires a computer. Also I always listen to music when I do my homework so I would need my ipod.
    5) I was pretty successful from staying away from the media. Although it was pretty hard because I was so tempted to text somebody or go in video chat. But the hardest for me was not being able to go on Facebook. My mom kept telling me to put down my phone, because she kept catching me texting.
    6) It made me feel annoyed. Media is an everyday thing, it hard to step away from it. I was pretty bored I have to admit I rely on media for a lot of things. During the day I was fine because I was with friends so my first option wasn’t to text but when I got home I was so bored. I don’t like to read so I didn’t want to read I couldn’t watch TV with the rest of my family, so my last option was just to go to sleep.

  5. 1. After completing the log I found that I had used approximately used 7-8 hours of media. I did not expect myself to be using so much media. I thought that I controlled the amount of time I use media but I was sadly incorrect. Time flies by while using media and I don’t feel that it is such a great thing. I didn’t know that such a topic could affect my life so much.
    2. I feel that media is starting to inject itself into everybody’s daily life. Currently for some people the media is starting to form into an addiction. Those are the heavy media users. To use too much media is bad for people’s health but now with all the new gadgets and gizmos coming out it is really tough to figure that out. Some of my friends are basically glued to their television and video game system. It is positive because while we use media we learn things as well from reading books and media helps us keep up to date. I wouldn’t consider myself a heavy media user because on school days I never get a chance to use media. If I do then it usually is for 30 minutes to an hour. Media does have positive effects on people, but too much of it can lead to a person’s downfall.
    3. What I did differently on the day without media is not really surprising. I did a piece of homework, I read a lot, I sketched in my sketch pad and I played tag and hide and seek with my little sister. It wasn’t really boring as one would call it because I am used to it. My parents have a restriction on Sunday as no media day to keep me away from the addiction. So I was basically prepared for this whole assignment before it was even given. As always the day seemed dull without the led screens of my television or phone flashing at me or music blasting in my ears but it is definitely a learning experience.
    4. I do not that I was more productive on completing my homework without media because I do my homework regardless of the situation. I almost never use media while doing homework, unless I’m typing something for class. Maybe there was improvement but to my knowledge nothing drastic of a change.
    5. I think that I was very successful on completing my day with any usage of media because as I have said before I have already practiced a routine for such a task. It wasn’t hard for me in the slightest way. I go by the saying that to control media is a good thing but to let it control you is horrid. I just think about that and it drives me from staying away from media that day. People can survive without media because our ancestors have done it so I believe that we can to.
    6. My withdrawal from media did not affect me because as I said it numerous times I have experienced it every single week. Bu it makes me think how so many people almost need media to survive but what happens to those who can’t afford it I feel really bad for them because they have to survive without media for months or even decades. To put myself in their shoes at this moment seems impossible and I wish that most people have to suffer through that torture. For a lot of people media is now a need.

  6. 1. After completing the timelog, I found that in the day I recorded I spent almost 4.6 hours using media. I don’t spend too many time watching TV, but I watched the Thanksgiving parade for about an hour that day. For two hours, I used the computer. (Usually for recreational purposes, but some time was spent on homework as well. ) For an hour I read a book (which I have to actually do more often). When it comes to my cellphone, I don’t have any Internet on it as many kids do or use it to talk too often. However, I sent and received approximately fifty texts that day. Most of my time was used though to listening to music. I realized that I waste a lot of free time using media, but not as much as I used to.

    2. I used to be a huge heavy media user (at one point I was afraid of going outside!), but I don’t consider myself a huge one anymore. Heavy media use does a positive and negative effect on me. The good side is that the use of media allows you to connect with people more easily and becoming heavily cultured. However, it causes other people to forget what’s really important (like school), procrastination, and social withdrawing, as I have experienced in the past. I also found that the more I use media, the more influenced I am by what I find and by society. When I stopped being too dependent on media, I found myself acting more like myself than trying to be someone else. Texting or chatting online also tends to make me very flighty and unfocused, making me more focused on the person than anything else.

    3. Spending the day without media was more challenging than I thought. Usually when I’m without media, I’m on vacation or something similar, making me not even care about going on. I couldn’t use my phone, blog or listen to music, making this day difficult. Most of my time, I drew, wrote or practiced playing piano (didn’t know if it was allowed or not). I also did some schoolwork or found myself thinking very often.

    4. I found that I was somewhat more productive while doing my homework, mostly because I wasn’t texting anyone or listening to music.

    5. I found myself somewhat successful during the no-media day. It was very tempting to break out of it, but I managed to stop my self before I could try. I heard music while in some locations I was in, but I mostly tried to ignore it. I also had huge urges to text someone or text back, but I managed to make myself stop before I did it.

    6. I felt somewhat annoyed at the beginning of my no-media day, but at the end, I felt more relaxed and thought-provoking. Not using media gives me more time to go back to doing creative works like drawing or writing and more time to reflect about life in general. I also found myself more relaxed when I was practicing my music than when I am usually on the computer or texting. It was challenging, but I love challenges like this one.

  7. 1. After I completed the time log I found a lot about my media usage. I found that I spend more time on social networks then anything else. I listen to music a lot more than I thought I did. I would say I spent a majority of my media time on my iPod, Facebook or tumblr.
    2. I would say that yes my generation does spend “practically every waking minute” on media. For myself yes this is true as well because when I get bored at home I automatically turn to music, computer or TV. This affects my friends because if my friends didn’t have phones or Facebook I could never reach them to ask to hangout and if we don’t hangout that friendship would most likely fade fast. A positive affect is I can meet more people online safely of course and I always have something to do.
    3. On the day without media I did a lot of things differently. I was more active I went for a run with my dogs and mom. I also made pretzels by myself and helped my mom cook. I did all my homework and caught up on Catching Fire (a book) that I haven’t read in forever simply because I didn’t have “time.” Also I cleaned my room and once I was done with everything I toke a bath and went to bed without the radio on.
    4. Yes, I most diffidently was more productive on my day without media. I was productive because I got things done that wouldn’t have gotten done i.e. homework etc. I also felt more productive because I accomplished a lot instead of passing hours watching TV or surfing the Internet.
    5. Honestly, during the day I was very successful with not using media, but after I finished everything I possible could do I listened to a little music as I cleaned my room. I ran out of things easier so sometimes I would sneak a little music. The urge was very hard to resist.
    6. On the with drawl from media day I felt content, and excited when I was doing something, but when I was thinking of things I could do it was hard to fight the urge. So when I was just sitting there in boredom I began to feel tired. For the most part I felt pleased with myself because I accomplished everything I needed to but the moments in between events I felt senseless because I knew things I could do so my boredom would go away but all of my ideas included media so I had to fight my common sense.

  8. 1. After completing the time log, I found that I spend three hours on a Saturday, using media. I do not really no whether to be proud of this or not but I think it’s an accomplishment!

    2. In my opinion media doesn’t affect my relationship with my friends, in some cases it can bring us together. For instance I have several friends who live in other states and I wouldn’t be able to keep in touch with them without media. Also media can bring friends together to watch a football game other something like that. Media can however be negative when all your friend does is text while you’re hanging out with them, and then you might not want to get together with that person. Now you see how media can affect someone positively and negatively.

    3. What I did differently on the day with no media was i played games with my family that doesn’t involve media, for example apple to apples. Another thing that I did was I played with my dog more. I on a walk with her, I played catch with her, and i even gave her a haircut. At first i thought that it would be very hard but it really wasn’t.

    4. I did not do any homework on that day. But if i did I’m sure it would have been a lot easier because there wouldn’t have been too many distractions.

    5. On the day of no media I had to tell myself several times to stay away from the T.V. But in total I had never laid eyes on my T.V., because I felt no need to. I was very happy with myself by the end of the day.

    6. The withdrawal from media made me feel happy, and proud. This is because it was an accomplishment. The last time that I went a whole day without media was when my power was out. But I realized that we use media to keep ourselves occupied, so when we find a different way to keep ourselves occupied we feel no need to pay attention to media.

  9. After completing the time log I found that I usually spend four hours and twenty minutes using media and a total of 262 texts. I don’t feel that this is a excessive amount of media being used but it’s a lot more then thought I used.
I don’t think that the statement in the notes is true to me. In my life I use media but I’m also active and play sorts and like to go out with my friends and do things. I think that media affects my friends and I positively. I think it does because for example, Face book allows us to stay in contact with our friends and be able to see what our friends are doing in their life. The one negative part about media is it is tempting and people use it at the wrong time sometimes.
On the day that I did not use media I didn’t really change my day too much. I still went out with my friends and went to the gym just I didn’t go on face book or watch television. Instead of doing that I did things like cleaning my room and doing yard work. Lastly I went to bed earlier than usual because there’s not much I can do at one in the morning not using media.
I found that I was so much more successful at doing homework without media. I think I was more successful because when I’m usually doing homework I am tempted to go on Face book or listen to music which doesn’t help my homework. With no media I wasn’t even distracted so I was able to get everything done at once.
I was mostly successful at staying away from media. I only used it a few times on my phone to text my friends but other than that I stayed away from media.
My withdrawal from media made me feel almost old fashioned in a way. Overall I am very happy we do have media because it is hard to o without it once you have had it.

  10. 1. After completing the timelog for the day, I’ve realized that I use media a lot. Probably more than I should, but personally, it isn’t doing much damage. I do wish when I was at home all day, I’d do more productive things, but for the most part, I can get away from the computer when necessary, so it’s not much of an issue for me.
    2. With media, I’ve been able to talk to people who enjoy the same things I do, which, gave me a new friend, I was able to meet up with her, and things are great. I like using media because people are honestly accepting on certain websites such as Tumblr, and it’s benefiting me greatly, because I can fangirl to people who basically do the same things. It’s fun for me. But I’d enjoy to be with my friends a slight bit more, but nothing is really effecting me negatively at the moment.
    3. During the day I had no media, I mostly read, and honestly just laid around doing absolutely nothing because one of the most important thing to me is music, and I couldn’t even listen to that, so it was a pretty depressing day for me.
    4. Homework was a great time waster during the day without media, since I had virtually nothing to do.
    5. I wasn’t very successful because I caved and had to listen to music. It was too boring for me.
    6. The withdrawal made me feel lonely and sad. I needed to talk to my friends, and listen to music.

  11. 1. On the day I used media, I was surprised about how much I used. Just that the fact that listening to music or even texting is considered media surprised me. I used about seven hours of media on saturday which I think is a lot because on school days I barely used any.
    2. I don’treally think I spend every waking minute using media. I spent 7 out of 14 hours awake using media which definately isn’t every waking minute. Media is all around yet so is the great outdoors. My media usage is average for the average teenager. It doesn’t affect my friends at all, in some cases we communicate better using media. When we text, use facebook or IM we are improving our relationships with our friends. Also media like watching a football game or a funny TV show, it might give us something to talk about or laugh about.
    3. On my day without media I felt myself talking physically to others or going outside more. I played with my dog a lot which she liked and walked her like 3 times. I also helped out around the house more with chores or helping my family decorate the house for Christmas. In all, I felt myself closer with others and further away from the need of media.
    4. I didn’t do any homework on the day that I didn’t use media. Although I didn’t do it on the day that I didn’t use media, it would’ve been much more effective because I wouldn’t have been lkistening to music or watching TV while I complete it.
    5. I was pretty successful staying away from media. I might have listened to music a little when I woke up or took a quick look at the Tv as I walked by , but I corrected myself. Also, with an annoying older brother seizing the day and tempting me with media, I was proud that I stayed away from him and accomplished my goal.
    6. My withdrawl from media made me feel peaceful. My eyes weren’t raceing across the TV trying to stay with the plot, or my head wasn’t filled with thoughts as i played video games, I felt cleasened. I almost felt more tired without media. I had a lot of spare time so I just rested and just slowed my “roll”. Owen M.

  12. In the Media Madness we were supposed to record media and not use media for a whole day. During the time I used media I figured that I listen to music a lot and on that particular day, I was on my computer for almost the whole day. I spent time using media a lot. My Time log can show it.
During the day of no media I felt bored out of my mind and I was also jealous of my brother because he had media. It was very hard to avoid, but I did it. I spent more time reading and relaxing. I tried my best by staying in my room and not using any media. Also, I went over to a friend’s house to hang out. I did not do any homework that day so I’m not sure on homework. I would probably do better, but worse because I usually work with music, which prevents me from being bored out of mind.
It is true that I use every waking minute with media. A heavy use of media can make you isolated and have more of an isolated personality. Also, that affects friends because when you are isolated from friends you spend less time with them. Otherwise, you don’t talk to friends that much face to face. You let media talk for you. For example, gaming sights and texting allows you to talk to friends, but not directly to their faces. Media can be good for friends because it gives you a topic of equal likeness in which everyone can talk about and enjoy. I addition, media is a good way to keep yourself entertained. Too much is a bad idea though.
To conclude, Media Madness was a very interesting topic and showed me a lot about over media uses and how it affects us. Also, that sometimes it is hard to let go of it for even one day.

  13. 1) After this project, I realize that I spend almost all of my day on the computer, listening to music, or watching TV. If its either doing homework with music in the background or getting distracted and checking my facebook or tumblr, I am almost always connected to media. In total, I spend about 8 hours and 20 minutes on electronics every day. That’s nuts! In the moment, it doesn’t seem that long but looking at that HUGE number is a real eye opener. I could be doing a lot more useful things in those 8 hours then rebloging pictures and texting people.
    2) The quote from the article that says “ Youth spend practically every waking minute when not in school using a cell phone, computer, television, mp3 player, video console, or other electronic device.” definitely relates to my life. If I’m not with friends, I’m usually on the computer and I am also usually on the computer with friends as well. I think the problem with my generation is soon we’ll be too lazy to even get a job or go to college or go outside. We need to wake up and smell the coffee.
    3) Some things I did differently on the no media day was I stayed outside a lot longer than I usually would. Also, I played bored games and spent almost all the day with my friends and family. It was actually a lot better day then with media. With media, its like missing out on many things in life. Its just one big distraction.
    4) I thought homework went a lot faster then it usually would. It seemed that it was a lot easier to get things completed and I didn’t have to worry about not being able to finish. It was a big relief to actually finish before 10 o clock.
    5) I was pretty successful with staying away from electronics. I had some trouble and I really just wanted to quit but I stuck it out. To stay away from electronics is easier if you surround yourself with things to do such as family, friends, or games.
    6) This project made me feel like media isn’t as important as I thought it was. I thought I was going to “die” without my electronics but once you realize this is pointless and I don’t need it, you can definitely survive without it. Was it a hassle? Yes, of course but was it the worst thing ever? No. It made me feel very accomplished and I think that every teenager needs to do this project.

  14. 1) On a average weekend day I spend about 7 hours and 40 minutes using media. I was shocked to know I use this much media a day. That didn’t include texting though. That day I sent around 221 texts and received about 234! Most of my time was spent on the computer. When I am on the computer I tend to go on the same websites and play music for hours and hours!
    2) My friends and I use the same media and have common interests. It mostly has a positive affect toward us. By liking the same music we can always start singing random songs together, or watching a movie together we can repeat lines and laugh about it. Most of us have Facebook and Tumblr. We all keep in contact through out the day! The negatives would be that media keeps us distracted from homework. I am always logged on to a website when doing homework and it takes me 4 times longer! Right now I’m on Facebook, Tumblr, and I’m listening to music!
    3) On the day I attempted to stay away from media I was at my friends house. I didn’t go there until around 3 because I slept really late which used up most of my day. We played games at her house and played with her dog. It was even easier because her laptop wasn’t working so all I had to do was keep away from my phone and the T.V. I finally broke around 11 at night and started texting. But for the most part I almost went a whole day!
    4) I didn’t do my homework the day I stayed away from media. I did my homework the day after, but either way I was proud I barley used media.
    5) For the most part I was very successful. I stayed away from media almost the whole day and found better things to do with myself. I was able to stay away from my computer and my phone for most of the day. I didn’t really miss the T.V. because no shows I like were on!
    6) My “withdrawal” from the media made me proud of myself, but at the same time I got angry. I was so bored for parts of the day when I sat in my room doing nothing. It made me think about how back in the 1900′s none of our media ever existed. If I were living back then I would be bored out of my mind! It’s really hard to stay away from media!

  15. 1) After completing my time log, I calculated that I used 7 hours and 20 minuets of media. I was really shocked at how much media I actually used. I imagined that I would’ve used a lot less. Considering how much time I am usually outside, I thought that I would have a lot less.
    2) This statement is completely true to me. I use media all the time. I wake up and start my day on my computer and end it the same way. Such heavy media use really does affect my friends and I . In a positive way, the media keeps us all connected and updated. So much use can keep us all informed and updated. But all the media use can be negative. It causes stress and is also a major distraction. When working on homework, I know that I get distracted by my computer and cell phone.
    3) On the day that I stayed away from media I tried to get outside and exercise. I also shut down all my electronics so I would not have a distraction. I was really careful and tried my best to stay away from the t.v, computer and phone. It was really hard, but I was successful.
    4) I didn’t do my homework on the day that I did my withdrawal from media, but I know that doing homework without electronics around makes focusing a lot easier. On an average day, it can usually take me an hour to do my homework. On the day that I didn’t have electronics, I was able to finish in half the time. Having nothing to keep from doing the homework allowed me to focus and understand the work even more.
    5) I was very successful at staying away from the media. Of course, I used my phone to stay in contact with my parents, but otherwise I was able to stick with it. I didn’t text and only watched the t.v when I was walking through the family room. Im really proud that I was able to keep myself from the media.
    6) My “withdrawal” from media made me feel very disconnected. I felt that I was missing out on what was going on. Considering I didn’t already have plans, I missed out on a few things. Being connected is easy and helpful. I really did not enjoy my experience.

  16. 1. When I had completed my timeline, I use media a ton more then I had expected. I never knew that listening to music was media because your just listening to a song. Also watching TV and playing video games took up a large fraction of time from my day.
    2. I defiantly think that media is a huge portion of my day for I use media about 9 to 10 hours a day. That is almost half of a entire day! Media also affects me in a positive way for video games and TV always takes stress of my head when I come back from a hard days work at school. Then again, media has it’s disadvantages if you think about it. Too much of media may hurt your brain in the long run and if you didn’t know to much of a good thing turns out to be be bad for you.
3. The day I went without media was on Wednesday and gosh it was terrible. I tried playing go-fish with my little sister but it was difficult because in the other room my brother was listening to his itouch and playing video games. I went to the High School with some friends of mine and we busted out a good four hours from playing soccer. As the day was slowing moving by I started to get use to not using media even though it seemed very boring.
4. With no media distracting me I felt almost more confident in my homework and put more effort into completing it correctly. Usually I like to hear some kind of radio or iPod playing in the back round because it’s casual for me while doing my work.
5. At first I was not so successful at staying away from media. I don’t know but for some reason I was eager to watch TV saying I do it everyday. It also didn’t help my family was using media in different parts of the house so that was bit of a challenge. Now that I think about it, I’m proud I survived a whole day.
6. The “withdrawal” wasn’t easy to do like said before, but as you move along in your non-media day you get use to the change or at least I did. When hurricane Irene occurred all hell broke down in my house for the first two days. The house was pitch black, the house was cold and we were losing food really fast. As the days passed and my family still had no power my parents cleverly bought candles to solve the problems. Also the “withdrawal” made me feel happen and graceful for what I have for others don’t have a lot of things I use everyday.

  17. 1) After completing the time log I discovered that i used approxamatley 6-7 hours of media during a normal day. I was very suprised about this because I did did not expect myself to be using media for such a large part of my day. I beleived that i was controling the amount of media I was using and was using my time to either study or play outside with my friends. After veiwing my sheet and finding out about how much time I spend in an average day using media I realized that I am going to have to be more responsible about how much time I am using on media.
    2) I believe that if the article “practically every waking minute” is true about that we use almost every minute after school or just normally on media that we should fix ourselves and get back on track. Sure their is advantages to media such as learning new things or learning things that may help you in the future but there are many downsides as well. In my opinion it mainly depends what type of media you are using such as a computer or television. For example if you are playing a video game you are wasting out on time to study while if you are watching the news are something else related to that you are gaining more knowledge and using your time wisley. For example media will affect you negativley if you are playing mindless video games where all you do is kill people or just texting on your phone for ours getting to use to not spelling out the words correctly or gossiping. Media can positivley affect you by if you are watching an edjucational or informing program or reading. This will help you alot in life and help you have a good future. All in all it really depends on what kind of media you are using.
    3. What i did differently on the day I did not use any media is my familly and I traveled to New York and looked at all different kinds of attractions. It was very nice to spend a day away from media and just focus on what was around you. I had a lot of fun and enjoyed it very much. After experiencing a day without media I am positive that I am going to want to spend another day away from it. I had a very positive learning experience from this and will definitly do it again.
    4) Yes I did feel productive on completing assignments during the day of no media. Although I am kind of use to it due to the fact that I am not aloud to do anything on school days except completing my homework and reading. So I guess I was productive on the day that I used no media. But even though I am a little use to having no media and was extremely buisy throughout my whole weekend I feel that I did acomplish a lot during the days with no media.
    5) I think that I was very successful on not using media for the whole day. Sure i had a couple urges to use mdia here and there but i stayed foucused and did not use any media. But i cant give myself much credit due to the fact that I had a very large advantage. Unlike most people I am used to not using media and I was away from home for a good part of the day. Therefore it was not very challenging for me not to use media for one day.
    6) My withdrawl to media really did not affect me in any way whatsoever. As I said before I have already gone many days in the past without media so it really was not a challenging task for me whatsoever. However I have noticed there are large amounts of people who seem to survive on media while the blindly turning away from the fact that there are many poor people who dont even have the option to use media. I am not trying to insult anybody but I am just saying that they should focus on other people more then themselves. I feel extremley bad for people who dont get the experience to use media and I try my best to help others put them first. Besides this subject I am really proud of myself for being able to stay away from media so easily and i think that I have learned a great deal of knowledge by completing this assignment/task.

  18. After recording my use of media on Friday the 25th of November, I realized that I used approximately 10-13 hours of media. During this assignment, I felt like I was going through an intervention. I never realized how much time I wasted on the computer and watching televison. My time spent on the computer took up almost 8 hours of my day. That day the number of texts I sent and recieved added up to 44, which is pretty low, considering.
For me, during the weekdays I am not allowed to play video games or go on the computer for more than an hour (homework not counted) because I have school. If I was allowed I would be on the computer the whole day, had my parents not enforced this rule upon my siblings and I. So during the weekdays after school, I don’t use as much media as I do on the weekends. I think this is the same for my friends. Without media I think a lot of people in our society would be bored out of their minds. Its not like it was in the 1800s, that if you were bored you could go outside and feed the pigs. So I think that media keeps us occupied in a positive way, but then that can also be negative if not regulated properly. Like I do most of the time during the weekends, people tend to stay on the computer. This can lead to laziness, which can lead to bad health. So media, although it can help us, can be abused.
On the day without media, I did a lot of things differently. Usually, my family watches television together, so I was sort of excluded in my room sobbing in the corner (just kidding). I read a lot, which I do anyway so that wasn’t much of a change. The day before, I sort of made a cheat sheet to prepare myself for the hard day ahead. I made a list of things to do when bored which included painting, singing, and even reading the dictionary (which by the way was not helping my state of boredom). I even found myself staring up at my ceiling itching to at least text someone to complain about how we cannot use media. Okay so maybe I am exagerating a bit, but let’s just say that day was not my favorite day of the week.
The day that I did not use media, I did not have any homework so it didn’t make much of a difference. But usually right when I come home from school I complete my homework before watching t.v or listening to music anyway.
That day without media I sort of messed up a few times. At school in Writing Lab, I was listening to music and in the middle of the period I realized what I was doing and yelled at my friend for messing up my good streak I had (sorry Darya). Also after school while I was working on a project at a friends house I was texting a friend. Thats when my friend reminded me after an hour and a half of texting her that it was my no-media day. Then I yelled at my friend for ruining my already-messed-up streak I had going for me (sorry again Darya). So some parts of the day I was cruddy at staying away from media, but in other parts of the day I did pretty well.
The whole situation of staying awy from media, like I mentioned before, was like an intervention. I realized that I may be adicted to media. It was not very fun. I realized that some breaks from media is good. Maybe I will take that 10-13 hours of media and reduce it to 5-8 hours. Okay so thats not a very good start but I’m trying

  19. 1.I found that I spend most of my time using the media on the weekends. Almost every hour of the day I was either on the Internet, texting, watching TV or listening to music. The rest of the time I spent with friends, doing chores or sleeping. However, even when I was with other people I tended to still whip out my phone. Same deal when I cleaned my room or did other things important. Somehow I managed to text or watch something on T.V. I did not realize I use media so much. When it comes down to it, it’s a huge part of my life. However, I am still able to get things done.
    2. Heavy use of the media affects my friends and I because it can consume our lives. Most teenagers use media every day. This can distract the youth from important things that matter. For example: homework and projects. However, the media isn’t such a bad thing for my friends and me. It allows us to do a better job in school due to research abilities and new programs. Therefore we can get better grades as long as we stay on track.
    3. On the day I did not use media, I found myself to be bored, but somewhat productive. I did not watch TV or use my cell phone, but I found it really hard not to listen to music. Music is my life. It calms me and essentially makes me happier. I do not think it’s a big deal however that I technically used the “media” because people have been doing it forever. Just because I listened to music on my iPod, shouldn’t be a bigger deal than listening to it on a record or CD like in older times.
    4. I was clearly more productive. This is because I did my homework, cleaned my room, did laundry, organized my desk and drawers, cleaned my closet, and many other things. I basically found anything to keep me occupied.
    5. Essentially I believe I was successful. I stayed away from basically everything with the media. (With the exception of music). I didn’t text anything. In fact I turned my phone off for most of the day because I was wasting battery not using it. Overall I believe I did a good job.
    6. My withdrawl made me feel bored. I found it odd not to walk into my room and not turn on the T.V. or computer. I felt that I fell behind in updating my tumblr or checking my phone. Though I guess it’s a good thing that I took a brake. My life is conusumed by the media so it was healthy for me to forget about it for a while. I almost had a day to collect myself, but I think I much rather use media when I want.

  20. 1) It did not come to any surprise that I spent about 6 ½ to 8 depending on the day. I do listen to music a lot, or watching YouTube videos, and I never noticed the enormous amount of time is spent watching television and playing video games. The whole project was surprising and entertaining for me to experience.
    2) Well I do see what the article is saying. On the other hand though, I see that some of us do follow that description, but others might be playing sports, outside activities with friends, or fun family activities that keep us away from the media. Also some parents do put a restriction on the amount of time spent on media, especially on school days. Honestly I believe that description does not fit me, unless it’s on weekends. I think that in ways the media can actually affect us positively, for example many families might bond over a show or the news might inform us on important events and other useful situations. Still, media definitely affects us negatively too. Many people might find themselves playing video games the majority of the day, falling behind in actual work, or people might be draining there brain with endless hours of television.
    3) Staying away from media was difficult especially when I didn’t even notice I was going to use it. It has become so often to me that I might just do it instinctively. Although, as I stayed away from media I found fun hobbies to make use in my time, hanging out with my friends were probably the easiest ways to waste it and just sleeping through the day was enjoyable.
    4) Well actually, yes. I was left with using my time more efficiently. Especially without any form of media to bother me. I also felt as if my mind was clearer as well to focus and get it done even faster. In fact, throughout all my homework television and video games completely slipped my mind. I felt that everyday should be spent like this, the only problem with that is when you’re using media it’s hard to stop.
    5) Honestly, moderately successful. It seems this way to me because sometimes I would just instinctively turn on the television, so I would suddenly notice it five minutes within the show. Also I have to admit I did use my IPod for about an hour total. Still I did stay away from media the majority of the time and soon got used to it and had many benefits follow. I still feel over all successful and proud for the amount of time I spent away from media.
    6) During my withdrawal I felt focused, energetic and happy, (obviously board for the first two hours too). That withdrawal was an excellent way to show what history was like, and to learn what we can do that can benefit ourselves and still be fun. At times I did see it as a waste of time but after evaluating my day I noticed that it was actually an interesting and nice thing to have tried.

  21. 1.) After completing my time log, I have found out that I spend a little more then 7 hours on media on a non-school day! During these 7 hours I was either watching T.V going on Facebook, Tumblr, texting and listening to music. I was shocked that I spend this much time doing something so pointless.
2.) I feel that I am using media every waking minute either by T.V, the computer and mainly texting. My heavy use of media does effect me positively and negatively. It effects me positively, because it is a place for relief for me. When I go on, it’s normally in my free time, and it relaxes me. It also keeps me social with my friends when I text and socialize over Facebook. It also impacts me negatively in many ways. First of all, it distracts me. I like to listen to music when I do my homework and it gets my distracted when I start singing along. It ends up taking me twice the amount of time it should to get it done. Also, sometimes it makes me lazy. Some days I will just want to sit around and watch T.V. Too much TV and media isn’t good either, because it keeps you from studying for school work.
3.) My day without media felt empty. It felt nice at the same time. I got to do things I wouldn’t normally do. For example, spend time with my family. Me and my mom sat down and talked. Another thing I did was play basketball in my backyard with my brother. I tried entertaining myself outside by kicking the soccer ball or taking a bike ride. It was kind of hard not to touch my phone all day or go on my laptop for 5 minutes, it felt kind of empty without it. I still had a good day though.
4.) Doing my homework the day without media was a breeze! It didn’t take me as long as it normally would! Without my distracting music and my phone constantly ringing it saved me a good 20 minutes! I felt more efficient and fluent. When had my phone, I would have to stop every 2 minutes to text. When I didn’t have my phone I just went right through it. It was a nice change!
5.) I was pleasantly surprised at how well I did without my media for a whole 24 hours! I couldn’t believe I can go that long without one text or 1 song on my iTouch! I was very successful and I actually did it! I was thinking I wouldn’t be able to, but i did! If i can go one day, maybe I can go a lot more!
6.) My withdrawal from my media made me feel empty, yet happy at the same time. I felt empty, because I wasn’t able to carry around my phone or go on the computer just once. I mean it was a big change, considering media takes up almost half of my day. I was happy at the same time, because I go to do things I never got to do! I spent time with my family and was outside. It made me feel proud of myself that I was able to go without media for a day!

  22. 1. After completing the time log I relized that i spend about 2-4 hours on any type of media. most of it came from using my Computer or texting my friends.
2.I dont find all of it to be true because I will go and play football or go outside every now and again. How the media affects my friends positively is that we can talk even if they live far away or have moved away or we cant reach them. How it affects them negatively is that I will porbably spend a lot more time on the computer then I will with my friends and they will get the impression I dont want to be seen with them. They might also be bullied online which can lower there selfesteem or can even lead to them not bieng friends with you anymore if someone spreads lies about you.
    3. On the day Without media I realized that without it I have so much more time on my hands and can do a lot of things I couldnt do in the past. such as going to the gym or getting to go skating and getting prepped for the hockey season. I could also make more time for my friends so we could hang out longer.
    4. I found that without the media I could focus on my homework much better and was able to get it done better and faster then last time since I didnt have to worry about the media hounding me to use it.
    5. I had a bit of a tough time preventing myself from using the media because of my family wanting to listen to the radio on a car ride but in the end I managed to stay away from the media for a whole day.
    6. This “withdrawl” from the media has really given me some time to think about the fact that if we didnt have media then we could be way more fit and have much more time on our hands to do things that will matter at the end of the day.

  23. 1) After completing the chart, I found out most of my day is consumed with media, about 5 hours recorded, but not counting the multitasking. I found myself playing a game with Spotify blaring. It was a very revealing experience.
    2) This is definitely true. I wish I could say otherwise, but I can’t. I think it causes some dispute between my friends because some might be better at a certain game and hold that above everyone else.
    3) I lounged around more when I went without media. I really didn’t know what to do, because we considered books were media.
    4) Well, I didn’t have much homework to begin with, so not really.
    5) I think I was very successful in staying away. Sean and I chose the same day, so that helped. Whenever we saw something media related, we would both shout “MEDIA!” In joking tones. This humor helped us stay away.
    6) It made me feel bored. It didn’t help that over the week end I got some really addicting puzzle games! I also felt like my aversion to media may have affected my family because I couldn’t watch them do anything media related.

  24. 1: I found that out of the13 hours I was awake, I only spent 2 of them without any use of media. Which frankly, is a large amount of time with no media for me. Most of this time was spent playing video games, or watching videos.
2: This isn’t really true for me. Sure, I spend a lot of time playing video games, but this “Day without media” was easy, And even on normal days, I don’t spend every waking minute using media. Also, all of my interaction with media, can help me make jokes with my friends, or we can spark conversation about the funniest new Youtube Video.
3: Well, on my day without media, I sort of went through out my day as I do normally, but, instead of going on the computer, or flicking on the TV, I instead decided to play with my dogs and my little brother, and luckily, we had a lot going on that day, just as we normally do.
4: This was the only HW I had so… Yes?
5: I was very successful at staying away from media. My true test was when I was eating lunch, my Dad put Football on the TV. It was nearly impossible not to peek every time I heard a muffled “AN AMAZING PLAY!” or “What a disappointment,” But, I remained strong. Other than that, the only music I listened to was the music used when we were rehearsing for a play I’m in.
6: I felt very irritable during my withdrawal period. I always felt like a perpetual boredom, that I took out by being very energetic. I guess Media brings out the lethargic in me. Anyway, I feel that were I to try again, for another 24 hour period, I would end up having to be taken out of my house by the SWAT team carrying Elephant Tranquilizers. I am usually generally a bit energetic, but with no sitting on my butt slowly destroying my Corneas to help contain my energy, I was bouncing off the walls.

  25. 1. I normally don’t use too much media over a regular week, but since we had a very long weekend, I overly used media. Surprisingly, I don’t keep changing my sources of media. I just use a couple but, for long hours like my Xbox 360. I use it so much that I think the controllers might lose all of their batteries at some point. Nevertheless, media sometimes consumes me.
    2. I believe that if the article “Practically Every Waking Minute” is true, we use almost every minute of free time after school or just normally on media. That means that people can be affected in various ways. For instance, if I use too much media at a certain time, and my Mom is calling me to help with something I always say ” OK just let me finish this game.” And that always affects me negatively because i feel finishing the game does not take long, but in reality it does and my Mom gets upset and gives me consequences. But if I play with my friends for that same amount of time I would listen to my Mom knowing that my friend and I can finish what has been started later.
    3. What I did differently was to avoid looking at the media, trying to steer clear of the room with the media( unless I needed to desperately go into the room) and to tell myself no you can do this. Sometimes it worked really well, but other times it almost got the better of me. Luckily, I was able to prevail towards victory, and achieve my goal. Now, I look back at that day and tell myself yes I did it and I can do it again if I need to.
    4. I found that it made my homework progress very quickly. I was not distracted by the media and got right to work. I found that i should not use media before homework because I really have trouble starting it and get distracted.
5.I was very successful when I did that day off media. I knew it would be a long day, and I might not make it, but I was totally wrong. That day went by so fast that I can’t remember exactly how it happened. At the end of that day I was so proud of myself that it gave me confidence. And using that confidence to aid me towards the next day, I tried to do it again.
    6. The withdraw didn’t make me feel any different. It just kept me at the same feeling all the time. I was a bit happier but only like 3.54 Percent. Otherwise that time didn’t affect me. I guess its back to school, and homework once again, but now when I use media, I will watch out for the amount of time I use it.

  26. Surprising. Surprising was the thought that came to my mind when I completed and reflected on my time log. I found that my daily routine is more influenced by the media than I would have ever thought. For example my completed log had a total of 10 hours of media. That means that almost half of my day is interrupted and revolved around media. The time log not only made me recognize media in my life but it helped me realize the truth of the article we were assigned to read. Before I completed the time log the article seemed exaggerated but if I thought that I barely use the media I can’t imagine how many hours people who always use media have. Much like my friends. Although turning on the TV to watch the news or listening to background music while doing something can be an educational and better use of time than watching cartoons it is still using the media. The more you use media (not the positive and educational type) the more the social skills of the young generation will decrease. Fortunately when I took my non-media day it was Thanksgiving. I had multiple opportunities to be social. My family and friends were around me constantly and lack of media didn’t once pass through my mind. I did find myself talking much more without the media! Not only was there more talking but before the turkey was cut I was able to complete a lot of homework without distraction. Although my family was everywhere a lot of them were using the media. For instance, my dad and uncle had the football game on and music was blasting. With that, although I wasn’t successful in staying away from the media I think I have learned the same lesson if I had stayed away from the media. I have learned and felt that the media will always be in the background of life but the struggle is restraining is from becoming the main focus.

  27. 1.) After completing the log, I realized that I use 1 hour and 30 minutes- 2 hours and 30 minutes per day. I did not think that I used that much media per day and I was very surprised!
2.) There are positive and negative results to all of the media. A positive result was that we are always in contact and there is no confusion when we are making plans. Also, it is easier to talk to one another because we can chat each other on facebook, or call each other. A negative effect, is that sometimes texting causes fights. I think that because texting doesn’t have emotion that sometimes someone receiving a text takes it the wrong way! So, texting I a negative effect of the media!
3.) On the day that I stayed away from media I felt different. I was with some people who also wouldn’t use media for the day, and we found it difficult. I would find that I keep looking for my phone, and wondering if I got any new texts. My friends and I realized that we use the computer a lot for entertainment and sometimes we didn’t know what to do. On that day, I just tried to avoid all things that would tempt me back to using media!
4.) I found that it didn’t make a difference regarding my homework when I didn’t use the media. This didn’t make a difference because I don’t use the media that much when I do my homework anyway. When I do my homework, I try to avoid media because I don’t want to get distracted while doing homework.
5.) I was very successful on the day that I didn’t use the media. I only texted one person that day and it was in the morning when I forgot I wasn’t supposed to text! Other than that, I did not use the media because I wanted to see what it would feel like to stay away!
6.) My withdrawal from the media made me feel different. I guess in a way I liked not feeling compelled to answer the people texting me. But, I also wanted to go on the computer and look on facebook! For the most part, I enjoyed going a day without the media, and I think it was an enlightening experience!

  28. I. After completing the time lot, I found that I spend 4 hours and 25 minutes using the media every day. I used to think that I only spend 2 to 3 hours using it a day. So I was surprised to see that I spend more than 3 hours.
II. The assignment that is part of the assignment suggests that our youth spend “practically every waking minute” when not in school using some electronic device. To me, this is not true. However, if it were true, then it would affect my friends and me. It would affect me and my friends negatively because the only thing we would want to talk about would become what we did using the media. However, it would affect us positively because it will at least give us something to talk about.
III. Something I did differently during the day without media was doing something that did not use electronics. Two of my hobbies are creating replicas of objects, and cooking. So, I helped make dinner, and I created a replica of the time traveling device from the movie Back to the Future.
IV. I found that I was more productive completing my homework on the day I stayed away from media. The media seems to be a distraction for me that prevent me from completing my homework. When I went through today without the media, I was able to stay more focused on my work.
    V. I was almost completely successful at staying away from the media today. At the end of the day, I had watched a little of the football game to see if the Chicago Bears were winning, or losing the game.
VI. My “withdrawal” from media did not change how I felt at all today. I have had my electronic devices taken away from me before so I knew what it would be like. I had had them taken away many times, so I had gotten used to going through days without them.

  29.  1.) I always knew I used a lot of media but now I see how much. I never actually charted it out to see. It is weird to see how much of my day was connected to other people in some way. Always giving me something to do. When I woke up I went on facebook. Then not being connected I was biking with 7 other people. This shows how when I wasn’t connected through facebook I was still connected by being with them. I was astonished to see how when I listen to music while reading an article it counts as double the amount of time since it is double the media.
 2.) All of my friends and I have heavy media use. Although I can only speak for myself. I have seen that media has had mostly a positive on my life but to say all positive is a stretch. For example when you have to go somewhere you don’t have to bring a big bag of things. On my phone I can read books, get the news, weather, text, go on faecbook, play games, listen to music, and much more. I do not need to bring so many things. It is all in my pocket creating such an ease. The bad thing is that I am more tempted to use the things. When I am standing in line or waiting for something I will often pull out my phone and check my facebook, or play a quick game. All keeping me tethered to the overall cloud.
 3.) I didn’t do much different. I had to kind stop myself a lot from some habits. I woke up and called my friends to meet up that was really it other than a few texts back and forth with my parents. I tried to stay more around my friends because I realized on a normal day when I was with my friends I didn’t really need to use the media. The only other way would be to be around family but on that day my parents were busy and not doing anything fun or interesting. So I stayed by my friends. I biked then hung out and filmed a few things, I didn’t edit it though. I waited until the next day to do that.
 4.) In a sense. Since I didn’t have any media on this day I chose to schedule and do all my homework then. That is the only extra productivity. But I didn’t seem to do it faster or anything like that.
 5.) I was very successful although it was difficult. I was able to stay away other then calling my friends to schedule plans and texting my parents. Many times I pulled out my phone and stopped myself.
 6.) I felt left out and different. I felt like I didn’t know what was going. No sense of what happened in the news. No sense of what happened with my friends. Or anything. The U.S. could have launched a nuclear missile and I wouldn’t have known until someone had told me. I realized how much I use media daily. This was hard but overall a great experience.

  30. 1.After filling out my time log I found that I used about 7 hours of media.

2.Well I think this much amount of media is effecting my friends and I in a bad way and a good way. Media is sometimes helpful, for instance if I have a question on homework I can Google it or call a friend. While other times it’s distracting, like if I’m trying to do my homework and I get bored so I decided to go on facebook… and I stay on for an hour.

3.On the day with no media I focused more on my family and spending time with people not electronics.

4.Actually I completed no homework on my day of no media. I can’t concentrate on questions and worksheets in silence, its better when I listen to music.

    5. I was pretty successful with staying away from media; I did it from when I woke up to and hour before I fell asleep. After I completed several hours with no media I felt accomplished and proud of myself.

  31. On an average day I consumed roughly 350 minutes of media watching TV, texting/talking on the phone, going on facebook, or video chatting.
That statement applies to me to some extent because when I am able to use media I almost always using it, but half of the time I am not able to use it. It does positively affect me though because it helps my do my homework and entertain me, but it was contradicting because it could also distract me from doing my homework.
I found that I was actually less social on the day I didn’t use media. I normally am a very social person, and I would rather talk to someone face to face instead of on the internet, but I normally make plans via facebook or by text, and since I wasn’t able to do that, I could make plans, and therefore I couldn’t go out and I ended up being less social.
The day that I didn’t use media I did fewer things then normally. I just slept most of the day and ate a lot food. It was a really boring day
I was relativity successful but I had a lot of urges to go on facebook but I resisted them. I didn’t go the whole 24 hours though. At around 1 o clock when I couldn’t go to sleep I had to listen to music to go to bed.
The media withdrawal actually made me feel very sick. During that day I mainly slept and ate, and I ended up eating so much over the course of that one day that I got a really bad stomach ache, I also slept so much that I felt drowsy and tired when I woke up.

  32. 1.After I finished completing the timelog, I realized I spent about four hours of my day using media. Although that didn’t surprise me, it’s crazy to think that a majority of my day is usually involved in media when not too long ago, many of the electronics we use today weren’t around. It makes me wonder what people did all day without media.

2.I think this statement is true. Our generation does spend “practically every waking minute” using media. This heavy use of media negatively affects friendships because if a person is too involved in electronics and stays in the house all day, they won’t be spending time with their friends therefore causing those friendships to fade. However, media can positively impact you and your friends too. For example, if your friend goes on vacation, you can keep in touch with him/her faster via Facebook or e-mail.

3.On the day that I did not use media, I certainly was more active. I was outside a lot and by the end of the day, I felt like I had really accomplished something. Although going a whole day without media wasn’t my favorite thing in the world, I was surprised that I didn’t get bored during the day considering I usually turn to my T.V or computer when I have nothing to do.

4.I definitely was more productive doing my homework on the day without media. When I’m doing my homework, I tend to start watching whatever my parents are watching on T.V. It’s also almost an instinct for me to go on Facebook before starting homework that has to be done on the computer. During my day without media I certainly got my homework done faster without many distractions.

5.I would say I was pretty successful in staying away from media. I was tempted by things like the computer and the T.V but I was pretty good at not using any electronics besides my phone. Although it wasn’t easy, I thought this project was a positive experience that every teenager should try.

6.My “withdrawal” from media wasn’t my favorite thing to do. I felt kind of out of the loop not being able to go on facebook or tumblr. I thought that a day without media would be awful and that I wouldn’t be able to do it. It turns out however, it wasn’t that hard at all and I had underestimated my ability to stay away from electronics. By the end of the day I actually almost felt healthier.

  33. 1. After completing the timelog I realized I spent about 8-9 hours using media. I was definitely surprised with the outcome. I didn’t know I used media so much. I guess it is because I constantly use my computer and listen to music in my room. I definitely don’t think this is affecting me in a bad way.
    2. I believe that it is true that teens can be affected both positively and negatively by media. I believe that media can either improve or worsen our schoolwork. Say you are watching television while doing your English homework. Most likely you will not concentrate or give full attention to the assignment. This won’t help your grades, or you. On the other hand, using media like a text book or an informational website can help your homework or project improve and it will be completed. I believe it depends mostly on the type of media that will determine how it affects you.
    3. On the day I stayed away from media I spent most of my day outside, on my trampoline, and I went to the mall. This was not very hard for me because I was doing things that were productive. I was not just sitting around. Normally, I would never really spend most of my day outside I would watch movies, text, read magazines, and go online. Because I could not do these things I simply found another activity.
    4. On the day that I did not use media I found a big difference when I completed my homework. I worked so much more differently, more productive than usual. This is because I would always listen to music or even watch TV while doing homework. But this time it was not there to distract me, plus it was done in half the time.
    5. I would say that I was successful from staying away from media. I found other things to do, and it was not hard for me. Whenever I was tempted to watch TV or listen to music I just walked away and did something else.
    6. My “withdrawal” from media caused me to feel different about how and when we use it. I realized that multiple kids are involved in media and some cannot live without it. In my eyes I do not believe media can affect us up to a certain point.

  34. 1. After I completed the time log I found that I spent most of my day on the computer, watching T.V, texting or listing to music rather then working on school stuff or spending time with family or friends.
    2. I do agree with the article that we spend “practically every waking minute on the internet” and I believe that this is affecting us negatively. Some people may get home from school not do homework and just head to the computer, video games, music, and start texting! this all can lead to not doing enough school work. Also, I dont think using this much media is heathy for our brains.
3.On the day without media my day was completly different! Instead of being on the computer all day I actully engaged my family and talked to them, got my room cleaned and set some christmas stuff up. I think the day without media was a good wake up call to my generation, but I dont think I could get use to it.
    4. Yes, I would say I was more concerned with my homework on the day without media. I did not have any distractions such as music, facebook, and texting. Instead I sat down, focused, and got it over with faster then I do when I do have media in my life.
    5. I think I was very successful on my day with out media. I did not really use any electronics besides when I would walk through a room and a T.V was on and I may have stopped for a minute and watch.
    6. I would have to say it was nice to be able to get on the internet and see what was going on and be able to watch T.V, but also It was nice to have a break from all that, help decorate, and get most of my homework out of the way!

  35. 1. After completing the time log, I found that I was using media too much. Usually, after my homework or chores are completed, then I listen to music, or play video games or on the computer doing something else. On the non-school day, I spent the majority of my time playing video games and then watching a movie with my family. When I wasn’t doing that, I was texting my friends or on the phone.

    2. The article described me. I use media more than I even thought I did. I agree that the life that everyone is living now uses too much media and it is taking over our days. There are less interactions with people and that is a bad thing. You spend too much time with media and you won’t know how to socialize and talk with others.

    3. On the day I stayed away from media, I did homework, raked leaves, went to a friend’s house to work on a project, had my soccer game, and visited with family, too.

    4. I was more productive on the day without media because I felt like I didn’t have any distractions like the TV or other electronic devices.

    5. I was pretty succssful staying away from media but there were a few times when it was hard to avoid it. I needed to text because I got lost getting to my friend’s house and my younger cousin wanted me to play a video game with him. I didn’t play it but I did watch his game. He was little and the game was only 10 minutes long.

    6. My withdrawal made me feel like a whole different person. With media, it’s like I’m in a fog. I am not focused on anything but the game or the whatever I am doing. Without media, I feel like I can talk with people, know how to make a conversation with my older cousins, friends, and family. I felt like I learned how to live a life.

  36. After completing the media time log I found out that I use media more than I though I actually did. I found out that not only did I use the TV but also I found out that I multitask between my laptop and the TV. The article mention that our youth spends every waken moment on electronic devices I think that this is true. I know that when I wake up my TV is usually on. While I am eating breakfast my TV is on and also when I am doing homework depending on what it is even while I have free time I am catching up on my favorite shows or anything. I don’t think that is effecting my friends but not in a big way. Whenever I am hanging out with anyone we do tend to just watch TV or just talk while listening to music. Just because we do watch TV and listen to music it has not affected the relationship and even if the media is not used we do have fun and we can communicate. Even if no media is used we do have fun I don’t think that having the media and not having it has effected me with my friends. When it does come to me and my heavy media use that is a whole other story. First it’s affecting me in a positive way by helping me with projects whenever teachers are not available. For example if I have a question on how to find the slope of something I can just Google it and their will be some kind of answer in which can help me. Another positive thing is that I can keep track of when things are due by putting it on my iPod and giving me a 3-day reminder whether it’s a project that I still have to get finished or a paper. A negative is that it does seem to be distracting at times especially when I’m trying to study. This is because while I am trying to study for a math test or social studies or any other test my iPod is constantly giving me new notifications of something and I want to check them which can lead me to other things that I should not be doing therefore causing me to not get my work done. Another negative is that there is always something going on such as the TV always having good shows and movies that you have really wanted to see and you tell yourself that you can watch and then you end up doing nothing which is kind of my problem at times Specially during weekend homework. This is because during the weekend I do spend most of my time on media such as my laptop or iPod or any possible media use. What I found that I did different on the day that I stayed away from the media is I went outside more specially on Saturday and the fresh air and temperature was really good so my sister and my mom and I decided to go out and do something so we went to Westfield and just looked around and talked. What was also different is that at dinner my family tends to watch TV and just laugh at whatever crazy thing is going on but on the no media use we mostly talked about the stupid things that happen on the week and about our thanksgiving dinner and what we like about it. I found that on the no media use day it’s easier to communicate. I found that completing homework on the day I stayed away from the media was easier but then again I do that even if I can use media. This is because I had figured that it must be easier to do homework without the media along time ago, which is what I usually do so it did not really make a difference for me because I do that everyday. I believe that I was pretty successful because it was not only I but also my family helping me get through the no media use. I was successful by not having to check something it was hard at times because I was getting bored but I sucked it up and got through it and I can say that I had gone on a not media use experience and I did not give up. I found that it is hard getting by with no media use what’s so ever it was like living in the 1800s when nothing existed and the only fun was looking up in the sky and looking the stars and clouds. I felt bored at times and hoping that it will soon end. I felt that it had brought me closer with my family not that we are not close but in a way we help each other get through a no media use day and it felt great completing this really hard task.

  37. 1) After completing the timelog, on Saturday November 26th, I found that I spent close to 6 hours using media.
    2) I do not think that I spend every waking minute using media. I believe this because I only spent 6 hours out of the total time I was awake, using media. Do I think that media impacts my life? Yes of course but I don’t think it takes control over my life. On the flip side, I do believe that my friends spend a lot of time using media. I think it can positively impact because media helps you find the answer to your question faster and it makes your life easier. If you have a question and you type it in to Google, in less than 5 seconds you have millions of results at your fingertips. It’s safe to say that media has made our life’s more hassle free but it does have a flaw. It can impact us negatively because we can easily become from what some may say “addicted” and it’s hard to stop once you are. It can persuade us to go on Facebook instead of doing our homework or look up book notes on a book we were suppose to read but were too lazy to. Sometimes I feel like life is passing us by but were so wrapped around in other things and don’t have the time to pay attention to our surroundings. I like to think of it this way, media is a great thing to have just like a lot of things, but over use it or use it for the wrong reasons and it can backfire on you.
    3) On the day I stayed away from media, although it was Thanksgiving, I conversed with my family and went outside. I probably haven’t been outside, aside from walking home from school since the summer time. It felt good to breathe in fresh air and realize that all this time, I was trapped inside by myself. I was pretty much guarding myself from leaving this media bubble our society has created, better known as the internet. I haven’t talked with my family in over a month, aside from talking when needed. We had real conversations about what’s going on in their life and funny stories that I would easily be missing out on. The whole day without media made me realize just how much of a vital part of my life I have let it become.
    4) I actually did find that I did more homework on my day without media. There was nothing for me to go check on Facebook or listen to on my IPod of watch on television. I had nothing else to do but start on my homework. When I am using media, I procrastinate my homework and things that have to get done. I figure I’ll just do them later but never do then until the night before or in some cases, the morning of. You have to know your limits with media.
    5) I believe I was very successful with staying away from media. If I had to rate myself from 1-10, I would give myself a 9. There were other things to do besides watch television. I could talk with my family, hang out with my friends or play outside. There was no need to be glued to my phone or the computer all day.
    6) My withdrawal from media made me feel like I was missing out on a lot of other things. All this time I could have been spending with my family was spent with media. It almost made me feel guilty, as if I had been doing something wrong. Think about it this way, your family isn’t going to live forever but if anything, media will only get more advanced. Thirty or Forty years that your family may still be living may seem like a long time because it is. But now think about those 6 hours every day you spend with media and then add on how much you spend with your friends. Then to put on top of that, you’re going to have a family of your own one day and you’re going to be all caught up with them and when it comes down to it; you should be spending more time with your family than you do now. Family comes first and that’s the way it always should be. But for years I have been putting media first. That what I mean when I say that media is going to affect you either way, but only you have the power to let it take control.

  38. I spend a lot of time using media which I shouldn’t. My use of media used to affect my homework and studying but after my parents saw my report card I felt disappointed in myself and knew I had to change something. I started planning out when I am going to do cretin things on a school day. But on weekends I do whatever unless I have homework or something involving school. I don’t think it is true to me because I manage my time and am responsible. The day I stayed away from media I just went to bed earlier and I hung out with my friends all day so I didn’t necessarily have any time to check my phone or go on the computer and it was easier than I thought. Also I would do activities not involving electronics or media. It turned out well. I didn’t do homework on my day without media but I was productive with other things such as chores and sleep. I was very successful with staying away from media but I know I would not be able to do it for more than a day because media is a big part of my life. My withdrawal form media made me feel worried just because I love going on a website called Tumblr and it’s my blog so I feel obligated to blog things which I wasn’t able to do and If anyone were to look at my blog they would see that I haven’t added anything knew and I take pride in my blog so I would hate for people to look down on it.

  39. Normally, on an average non-school day, I literally go outside for the whole day. On the day that I recorded my use of media, which was Thanksgiving, however, I spent 8 hours using the media. Mostly I listened to music in the car for 4 hours and spent the other 4 hours watching TV and writing a story on the computer with my friend via Gmail chat. When I realized how much time I spent using the media, I was completely surprised. I thought because it was Thanksgiving, that I would use a maximum of 4 hours in total using the media when it turned out to be double that. After thinking about it though, it does make sense more because I was sitting in a car for 4+ hours and I was bored.

I think this statement is completely true for me. I do spend a lot of time using media such as texting, watching TV online, and just using the computer. I think such a heavy use of media affects me and my friends because we do isolate ourselves for each other. However, we also don’t isolate ourselves because who are still keeping in touch with each other even though we are not speaking face-to-face. We isolate ourselves from each other because we know that there are other way to keep in touch with other people because we have texting, IM-ing, and social networking sites. We are positively affected by our use of media because with our use of computers and rifling through the newspaper looking for the comics, we keep in touch with the world around us. We stay up-to-date with current events, like if someone died or something happened in a foreign country, because we either look for them, or they get in the way of what we are trying to do, for example, go on Facebook or check our email.

On the day that I stayed away from media, one of my best friends came over and we just hung out. It was a half-day in school, so half of the day was already taken care of. Because we were both working towards the same goal of going without the use of media, we were able to come up with an idea for a story that we have been working on since. We came up with characters and talked about how we would actually write the story. We hung out in my room for a couple hours and then we just chilled. We talked and we tossed stuff around my room, obviously making it a mess. I realized that I didn’t really need to use media, when I could just have my friends come over or go outside all day; it was just something to fill the day. It wasn’t necessary at all.

On the day I stayed away from media, I really stayed away from it. I didn’t even go on the computer to do homework because I knew that I would get distracted by it and go on a gaming website and play games for the rest of the day.

I was very successful at avoiding media, as long as I kept myself busy. When I wasn’t busy, my friend and I just talked about random things to keep myself occupied. If I wasn’t tempted to use media, then I wouldn’t use it.

My withdrawal from media made me feel refreshed, I guess. I don’t really know the word for it though. I felt that after a while that I didn’t need it and it sometimes became bothersome for me to use. I thought that I could be doing a lot more productive things like cleaning my room or going outside or meeting up with my friends if I hadn’t been spending the whole day using the media. Sometimes, it just got in the way with what I wanted to do and that made me want to avoid it even more.

  40. 1) Well after I completed the time log I realized that I spent a lot of time using the media. I did not even know that little things made a big difference on the chart such as just watching a 30-minute TV show.
    2) I think it is affecting my friends; an example would be is if I started watching a video or singing they would all join in. Also I think media effects my friends by not being able to see them, which results with me not seeing my friends and using more media.
    3) I was more bored but after a while I was able to do the things I was interest in and haven’t done in awhile. Such as my art, once I was doing it I realized how much I missed doing it. I also slept in because I knew that once I woke up I had nothing else to do. I really bonded with my family and had a fun time playing with my brothers and sister.
    4) I did my homework easier and I didn’t have music blasting in the background. I really concentrated better and understood my homework, which to me made me understand more in school about the topic we were learning.
    5) I was pretty successful. There were times when I really wanted to listen to music or watch TV but I didn’t and tried to distract my self with doing other things with my self, which seemed to work better for me.
    6) The withdrawal of media made me really think about how I used it and that I over use it. Some kids are unfortunate and can’t afford having it while I’m sitting and always using it. I think looking back on the day with no media it made me feel happier than sitting and watching TV or listening to music that I was outside playing and being with friends. I’m sure the kids who are less fortunate want to have more media in their lives, but they don’t need it.

  41. 1. Normally on a non school day I am outside for must of the day , but the day I recoreded my useage of media was on thanksgiving and I didnt feel like going outside. In total I watched 5 hours of tv on thanksgiving because of football.
    2. I think this heavaly impacts me and my friends because we are so used to talking to eachother over texting or on face book rather than actuallly talking to eachother face to face, but this is also a positve thing too, its quick to tell eachother something.
    3. During my day without media I had a friend over and we went outside and we talked face to face, I also had time to read my book Catching Fire.
    4. I feel that I didnt as well on my homework that I could have beacuse I useually listen to music when I do my homework and I got so used to that.
    5. A day without media made me very bored. Some thoughts I had during that day were “this is horriable,i’m starting to get really bored!,and this is difficult.”

  42. 1) After completing the timelog, I was shocked about how much media one single person could use on any given day. After compleating the log I found out that I was using about seven hours of media on a not average day. It was not an average day becuase I was out of the house the majority of the day and did not get home until very late.
    2) I personally don’t think I use every waking minute using media but i am pritty sure I have come close a few times. This really has no posotive efect on myslef or any or my friends. It afects them negativly because you are not around to go and hang out or do anything social like that if your syes are glued to a computer screen.
    3) When I was going through the day with no media I tried to go outside and hang out with my friends and do active things like play soccer or ride bikes.
    4) Yes, I thought it was alot easier to compleat homwork because there were no destractions while i was doing that. There was no music going in the backround or no phone buzzing next to you while you try to work.
    5) I was succesful up until around 6 o’clock when I forgot about it and accedently turned on my radio when i went upstairs into my bedroom.
    6) My withdrawl from media was a bit diffrent from my daily routine because times that I would usually be using media (like after homework) I had to fill in with going outside and doing other things.

  43. 1. Even though I was banned from the media at the time, it still shocked me of how much media I used at the time.
    2. The good things about me using media are that they are fun, I can play with other people, and sometimes the games can actually improve your things, like reflexes or hand-eye coordination. The bad things though are that I’m not talking to someone one face-to-face and that I don’t do much else.
    3. On the days that I didn’t do the media, I read more books, played more board games, and goofed off in the basement.
    4. I wanted to take my time on my homework because it would be me only time on the computer, so I felt like I did better.
    5. It was very hard not to sneak it, but since I don’t have a phone, I was successful in staying away.
    6. My withdrawal from the media made me feel like I had plenty of time to do other things.

  44. 1.I found myself using media a lot on a typical day because the small stuff like listening to music adds up over time. During a school day you aren’t the one using the media, the teachers are therefore we would use fewer medium on a school day. Although, on a typical day I would use a lot of media because the small things add up to become one.
2.We practically use fewer medium on a school day because we see our friends or we could talk to them face to face. Heavy media may affect us because it may get to our brain, start heavy addictions and sometimes it may even who we really are. Media positively affects us, because we are enjoying what we love, and are able to stay in contact with friends and family. Media had negatively affected us because now we become lazier. For example, instead of getting out a bike or a scooter to hang out with friends that live near us we go and talk to them online or through text. People could avoid pulling out a phone or waiting for the computer to boot up by going face to face, because we lose who we are socially.
3.On the day without media I really didn’t do much of a difference except texting and on Facebook. I went outside and played basketball, and I slept in and talked to my family. I basically did what I would normally do but didn’t interpret media into my everyday life.
4.Yes, I did find myself a little more productive when I did not use media because I had more time on my hands. I wouldn’t have to stop what I was doing to text back to my friend, or get on Facebook to hear the latest gossip that happened. I felt more accomplished on the day where I used no media.
5.I was somewhat successful I tried not to do any of the usual media that I did, such as getting on Facebook or texting. To fill in for it I talked to my sister and brothers, played outside and listen to music while in the car and that was just about it.
6.I felt successful when I don’t use media. For example I was able to clean my room, do my hair, and wash my clothes, and I still had extra time to do whatever I pleased.

  45. 1) After completing the time log I found that I spent a good 5 hours in total using some kind of media. This makes sense because I do tend to check my email often and I’m always reprimanded by my parents to stop texting my friends. However, I didn’t realize that by using several types of media at the same time would increase my media time so much.
    2) I don’t like to spend all my time using media because I think it regulates the amount of social time I get during the day. In some ways it’s good that people use media because they get instant updates on news and it may even improve their educational skills if they use the right type of media. Although, if people continue to use an excess amount of media and waste their time playing video games and whatnot, it may have a negative impact.
    3) On the day I stayed away from media I was outside with my sister and some of her friends. We have a park right next to our house and since a lot of the children on our street are around my sisters age we hang out over there a lot. My experience with this was actually pretty interesting because I had to refrain from listening to music, which I often do when I can’t go to sleep, and going on my computer to surf the web.
    4) I am always productive in my homework because I think it is incredibly distracting to listen to music or be on the computer while I do it. Usually, if my homework doesn’t require going on the computer, I will do my homework in the living room where my family is. For some reason their constant chatter is much less distracting than music where I have a tendency to sing along.
    5) I have to admit, it was hard to stay away from media. My family loves to watch movies on weekends so I had to convince them otherwise on that one. As for my computer, I always keep it on sleep mode when I leave it so I can open it up quickly, this time I had to shut it down.
    6) My “withdrawal” from media wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Back in Connecticut we used to get power outages all the time. In fact, once there was a rainstorm on my birthday and we were going to New York to watch a Broadway show called Stomp. Not once did I use my phone for anything. I can say for a fact that I had so much more fun camping out in the basement talking to my family than I ever did all alone with my computer.

  46. 1) After completing the web log I found that I spent about a high amount of media today. Because now technology allows you to multi task it gives me even media usage with less time. For example I could go on Facebook and listen to a song on YouTube at the same time.
    2) In my opinion I think the author is exaggerating. Many kids play sports or hang out with friends. I think that media affects me positively and negatively. I think positively because it is easier to contact my friend. You can send them a text or chat and they can answer quickly. Media helps me know what’s going on personally and globally. My last reason why it affects me positively is because maybe you can’t contact someone in person because they live far away. Media also has negative effects. One effect is that it isn’t healthy. If you don’t go outside and hang out then you will become fat and not in good condition. Also media can start fights. For example maybe you feel safe behind a computer so you will say something mean but in person you can’t back up what you’re saying. Lastly a negative affect is that it could be a waste of time. For example Facebook is ok for a little but excessive use will take into your school time.
    3) I did a couple things differently when I didn’t use media. First I spent more time with family. Instead of texting my friends I bonded with my family more. Another thing I did was spend more time outside. I did this on thanksgiving and it was a beautiful day I played football with family and friends. During this assignment I had trouble because after a while I got bored but I overcame it and went the whole day without it.
    4) The day I didn’t do media I didn’t work on home work. Even though I didn’t do homework I could tell I could complete homework easier. I think this because there were no distractions or addictions to go on Facebook and text my friends.
    5) I was very successful in going a day without media. I think this because I completed the task. It was very difficult but I was determined to succeed.
    6) At first it felt bad. I thought it was a dumb idea and it wouldn’t really affect my day. But after I while I felt like it was worth it. I say this because I got to do so much more in my day than I would have with media. It showed me that media takes up a large part of my day.

  47. 1) After completing the time log I figured out I spent about 6 hours using media. I was really surprised because I use media a lot since my phone has game and music on it.
    2) Heavy media is affecting me positively because I have to do most of my homework using the computer since I type a lot of things. Also I find answers I have to u se media. But it affects me negatively because when I want to do homework I end up on Facebook or You tube, which can distract me.
    3) I didn’t do much differently because I was driving home from Maryland so I spelt. Then when I got home I just went outside and hung out with neighbors so I didn’t have to use media at all. It was pretty fun though not to use media although I got kind of bored.
    4) I didn’t have any homework but if I did I would have to use media to complete it. But if my homework didn’t require media then I would get it done quicker since I wasn’t distracted. But sometimes I need to listen to music to complete my homework because it helps me think.
    5) I was pretty successful from staying away from media. Once in awhile I would play a game on my phone since I was driving home, and I got pretty bored. But during the day I was fine since I was with friends. I had people over that night so we didn’t use media at all. But it got pretty boring after a while.
    6) My withdrawal from media made me feel accomplished because I never went a day with out media. Usually I’m listening to music almost everyday or on facebook. So it was cool to go a day without media.

  48. 1. After completing the time blog I found I used about 11 hours of media in total on an non school day which i never would have thought. It feels like such less.

    2. I think the huge use of media is helping us because we could be more informed with whats going on in the world. Also it is bad because it can be used to cyber bully and show us stuff we don’t need to see.

    3. What i did differently on my day without media was took the day normally as if we didn’t even have media. I found it interesting to see if i would go crazy which i didn’t because I was very busy and all i did differently would really only be me not doing anything when people turned on the t,v, \

    4. I didn’t find i did homework more productively because when i do my homework i usually do it without media anyway and it was basically normal routine for me.

    5. I was very successful on my day without media because i was distracted through out my whole day so from when my day started i was to busy getting ready and when it ended i was to tired to do anything but sleep so i fell right asleep when i got home.

    6. My withdraw from media made me feel accomplished because i didn’t feel good about not using any media because its something important, but i felt like i did good by completing the assignment.

  49. 1 I found out that the only things I spent more than 2 hrs on were listening to my ipod and watching tv
2 it doesent effect me that much i still hang out with my friends
3 I went out shopping and I tried to stay away from the tv.
4 yes I was more productve.
5 I was succesful but it got hard at night when I normaly watch tv
    6 I felt bored occasionaly

  50. 1) After completing the timelog, i realized that i spent way more time on the media than i thought i would. I realized i spent 8 whole hours either on the t.v., computer, texting, or playing video games.
    2) I believe that the media use does not effect me or my friends at all. The media i believe is just to pass the time. I personally use the media when im bored or talking to someone.
    3) On the day i didn’t use media, besides doing H.W. i tried to read a book, which i never do. The day I stayed away from media really made me realize how much i use the media, and how important it is in my life.
    4) No, i feel i gave the same effort on the day i stayed away from media compared to the days i use my laptop, or watch t.v. but, my H.W. got done alot faster.
    5) I was successful on staying away from media. I only used my laptop to do a project that i had to type.
    6) My “withdrawal” from media made me bord! I dont think a day has ever gone by any slower. My “withdrawal” from the media really made me realize how much of my day i waste away looking at a t.v. or computer

  51. When I looked through the timelog I realized I spent a lot more time using media then I realized. I spent 8 hours and 20 minutes using media not including multi tasking. I didn’t think that I spent that much time however when your listening to music or going on online an hour of media can feel only five minutes long.
Even though mostly all of us enjoy using media it does have affects on our use both positive and negetive. We are affected posetively because we are kept up to date on everyhting that is going on in this world. Media also has a negetive affect on us since it does affect our body and in and out.
On the day I stayed away from media I tried to do things diffrently. For example I tried to keep myself busy. I catched up on work I needed to do, I organized my binders, and I read a book.
On the day I stayed away from media I felt I not only finished All my homework but it took me less time. Since I had no distractions like texting, listening to music or going on facebook.
I was pretty successful from staying away from media I broke it once or twice because I’m so used to using it I forget I wasn’t allowed to. What would have made it easier is if all my friends stopped texting me and my TV screaming loud in the other room.
My withdrawl of media made me realize how much I depend on media everyday. It made me wonder if I’m only 13 years old and I use media eight hours a day will my media uage double by the time I’m 26. And would it triple by the time I’m 39. That means I will be useing media 24 hours a day. That’s not time to sleep or have any contact witrh the world. I wonder is media dominatin our nation? But shouldn’t we be dominating it.

  52. 1. The day i recorded was on saturday and surprisingly i spent a lot of time using media. I didn’t realize how much media i use. For 9 hours i used media.
    2. I dont think i use media all the time. I don’t think it affects me either.
    3. On the day i without media i didn’t do anything different since it was a school day. I went out side during the day.
    4. i wouldn’t know if i were more productive doing my homework because i don’t use media while doing homework and it was during the weekend.
    5. it made me feel like i use to much media because i was tempted to use media more when i didn’t have it.

  53. 1. Subsequent to filling out the time log, I noticed how much I was using media and it seemed like a lot but it was the same as always. Even when doing homework I felt weird about having music play but I normally do. Texting and going online seem to take up so much of my time after noticing how it looks on paper.
    2. My media use effects my friends in both positive and negative ways. I am able to talk to my friends more and make plans to hangout which help us come closer. However, when with on friend, it is rude and awkward if either one of us pulls out or phone and ignores the other but texting is such a casual action.
    3. The day that I stayed away from media I constantly felt like I was forgetting to do something. I kept taking out my phone to find it off to take away the temptation and then remember not to use. I had some trouble making myself busy and cooked dinner as something to do.
    4. I didn’t have much homework the day I stayed away from media which wasn’t too good of planning because homework would have been a distraction. Although, the little homework I had did seem to go by faster without the distraction of music in the background.
    5. I was able to successfully stay away from media but not without problems. As I mentioned before, multiple times I was about to use my phone, but managed to stay away from it by turning it off. Also, I had to leave the room if someone was about to turn the TV on.
    6. The media withdrawal made me think of the how different the lives of kids without the money for media must be. They must be used to not even having the temptation which would be easier if they had to go without media. It seems impossible for people around current technology to ever go back to a time with none.

  54. 1. In one average day I find that I use around 6-7 hours of media a day. I never realized that I really use that much media in on day, but some things that you think are nothng can add up in the hours.
    2. I think that this much media usage is effectingus both positivly and negitively. The negitive is that kids are using media to communicate so much and sometimes don’t know how to have a conversation in real life. The positive way it effects us is that it helps boost people’s social life and helps them know about their friends and world faster.
    3. The day I didn’t use media I really sat around doing nothing a lot. I didn’t have much to do since now the days are shorter and colder so after the sun went down i had nothing to do.
    4. I felt part partially more productive. I felt this way since I normally listen to music when I do homwork because it helps me concentrate.I did have less distracctions though and that made me more productive.
    5. I was mostly succesful except for when my friends texted me execpt for that no matter how tempting the TV was I didn’t turn it on.
    6. My “withdrawl” made me feel as though People now-a-days need media because that is the way that they have been raised.

  55. 1. After completing the time log, I found that I spent about three hours on a weekend using recreational media. Most of my time was spent watching TV, and going on the internet. I realized that a large portion of my day was spent using the media, when I could be doing other things like finishing my homework early, and working on projects
    2. I think that using the media, “every waking minute,” will definitely negatively affect your friends, and yourself. Using the media that often is obsessive and you will end up texting your friends more than actually talking to them. This also will make you less likely to be as productive when doing your homework and your grades will drop. If you know how to limit yourself, and use it only sometimes, it can have a positive effect. You will be able to keep in touch with your friends, but also have time to go outside, and do school work. Having a balance of using the media all the time and not at all is important. You want to be able to keep in touch with your friends, but you don’t want to use the media so often that it keeps you from doing other important things in your life.
    3. On the day I spent away from media, I found that I worked on other things more. For instance, I did my homework early, and went outside more. Instead of watching TV, I took my dog on a walk. While it helped to not use the media as much, there were also some drawbacks. I couldn’t read at all, or watch TV, and my day was extremely boring when I wasn’t working on something, or being outside.
    4. Additionally, I found I was more productive doing my homework. I had nothing else to do, so working on something was the only choice I had. I was able to finish quicker, and then have a lot of time left in my day to do other things. There was no temptation to go to my phone or go online, so I did not have any distractions.
    5. Even though most of the day I stayed away from media, I did use it at some times. At night, my family likes to watch TV together, and since I wasn’t able to read because that counted as media, I watched a little. I didn’t want to be anti-social and sit in a different room, so I had to. Other than that, I was very successful at staying away from media.
    6. My, “withdraw,” from media made me feel accomplished, as well as extremely bored at the same time. I realized how much my day was filled with media, and how without it, I would have to find other more productive things to do. I was proud of myself that I was able to follow through with such a hard assignment, and managed only to use the media once that whole entire day. I think that I definitely benefited from this experience, and it helped me realize how often I am using technology.

  56. 1.After completing the time log, I found that I used about 8 hours of media in one day. That is about one third of the day, which is a lot. I was extremely surprised by this because I didn’t think my media usage was a large amount before I did this. Listening to music made a large impact on my media usage. I never realized how much I used it until I paid attention to it.
2.I believe heavy media use can affect people positively and negatively. Some positive things about the media is that it helps people interact with each other. For example, kids can play video games together, watch a movie with each other, or listen to music together. One very negative thing about media use is that kids can take it too far sometimes. For example, playing video games all night long or texting someone when you are right next to them. Using media can be positive, but taking it too far can be very negative.
3.On the day I stayed away from media, I did many things differently. Instead of using up all of my time watching TV or going online, I went outside. I walked my dogs, jumped on my trampoline (which I hadn’t jumped on since summer), and I even helped my mom do some yard work.
4.I was much more productive on doing homework when I did not have media. Without the music and Facebook distracting me, I was able to get my work done a lot faster. Also, because I wasn’t using media during the day, I was able do my homework earlier than I usually do.
5.I would say that I was very successful with staying away from the media. Although at times I was very tempted to go on Facebook, or listen to some music, I refrained from doing it. My whole day was Facebook, TV, music, and any other type of media free!
6.At first, the media withdrawal made me feel very bored, but as the day went on, I found ways to entertain myself without media. By the time the day was over, I was happy that I had so much fun even though there was no media involved.

  57. 1. 1. After I finished my time log I found out that I only spent 5 hours and 20 minutes using media. I personally thought it would have been longer but due to the busy day I had, I can see why it was that much. But even then 5 hours is a long time to be using the media.
    2. 2. This heavy media is affecting my friends and I both negatively and positively in many ways. To start with heavy media affects us positively because the way we get notified what is going on in the world. For an example texting, you could be texting your parents to find out what is going to happen after school or texting someone important to find out important information. Also you hear news about your favorites celebrates and what is going on in the world, though a different form of media called reading articles and magazines or even online websites. But on the other hand it affects us negatively by distracting you once you hear your phone go off. If someone is constantly texting you every minute, you are obligated to keep checking your phone to text back, while doing so you are pulling yourself away from your work that you were doing before you got the text. Texting could have a negative affect, because in some cases bullying is used through text and sometimes parents/adults don’t even know that the bullying is taking place because they don’t take the time to check their child’s phone. That is how heavy media can affect us in both a negative and positive way.
    3. 3. On the day I stayed away from media I did many things differently. First of all I stayed away from turning on my radio when I was in the shower or just in my room. I also tried my best to stay away from my phone and texting, which went ok, I had sometimes when I just gave in, but if a parents called or texted me had to check it. I was outside more and with my family more then usual, I’m mostly inside on the computer, watching tv or on the phone and to busy to stop and spend time with family by choice. Lastly, I was reading my book because I had nothing else to do, it takes a lot to make me want to read, unless I really enjoy the book. Those were some things that I did differently on my day without media.
    4. 4. Yes, I did find myself doing most of my homework because I didn’t have anything else to do because I wanted to try a day without media. But I also didn’t find myself going on the computer checking facebook or listening to my music once I was doing homework. On any other day I would be listening to music and checking my facebook once I stopped to take a 5 minute break even though they lasted longer than I would have wanted them to. Therefore I found myself on my day without media not getting as distracted and doing my work more then I usually do.
    5. 5. I was successful staying away from media that one day because I really wanted to know if I could last. But like anyone I did break down and stop to check my phone and listen to my ipod. I forgot that I was trying to stay away from media but it’s so into our culture that we use media that I just let myself give in.
    6. 6. My day withdraw from media made me feel strange about myself because I haven’t been using media though out my day, which I usually do. Like anyone if stopped doing some thing that you do on a regular bases then you will feel that off or that some thing is wrong. I was proud of myself for completing my day without media as best as I could, but I did wish I could have tried to use everything but media. I can speak for many people when I say this media plays a big role in our lives now that it has formed its way into our cultures and lifestyle.

  58. 1)After I completed my time schedule, i found that i used a lot of media throughout the day. I think i probably used too much media. I think I should try and cut back on the media.
    2) I believe that the statement is true towards the youth today. Media takes up so much in our lives it takes away from spending time with family. Although media can be a good thing. If a friend who you have known for a long time moves away, media is the only way of contacting them.
    3) On the day I didn’t do media, I stayed outside with my friends. When I would have to come in, I tried to find things around to do that I have procrastinated from doing. Such as cleaning my room and doing my laundry.
    4) I did see that I was less distracted from doing my homework. I finished my homework quicker and was able to go outside and play soccer with my friends. So I think that when I do my homework, I won’t use media unless needed to.
    5) I was very successful in not using media. There were times when I felt I would crack and would have to turn on the TV. But I was able to make it through the day and go without media.
    6) My withdrawal from media made me feel unlike myself. I would usually wake up and turn on my PlayStation right away. But instead I started off by going outside and shooting hoops. I never really even used my basketball net before but I occasionally would. I felt at times that I wouldn’t even survive half a day without media. But I was able to do it and I was proud that I did it.

  59. 1.) After completing my time log, I have found out that I spend a little less time on the media than i thought before. after completing the time sheet I found out i spend about 7 hrs on the media on a non school day. I was really surprised at the results because I thought that I spend more than about half days worth on the media but surprisingly I didnt.
2.)Well i dont use the media as much. Because I am usually outside with friends because I don’t really stand and wait at the computer and play games i get really bored ; but if I were to spend as many hours this would effect my friends becasuse than they would want me to play outside and I wouldnt want to because I would want to play video games. Also this would effect my weight because I’m sitting at the computer and eatting snacks the whole time. At the same time this is positive because we can find out the latest news and technology that came out .
3.)I played outside with friends for the whole day, but nothing really changed but i read the news paper and read books that I haven’t read before.
4.)Well I’m not allowed to use the media durring homework unless it’s on the computer. then when after I am done I can use the media as i like. But it is more productive without using media during homework.
5.) I was really good on not using the media.Because I’m not addicted to the media as much people are.
6.) Well when i wasn’t around media i felt okay, but then as the day went on
I felt more better not using it at all.

  60. 1) After I completed my time log I realized how much media I actually use. I always thought that I was not addicted to media, and use only a fraction of what others do. That may or may not be true, but either way the 9 hours that I use with media just don’t seem right to me. There are only 24 hours a day, and I spend about 15 of them awake. If I add in time for meals and family time, I spend just about every waking moment with media.
    2) This statement does seem to hold true to me, I spend every waking minute with media. I feel that this in some ways strengthens the relationship I have with my friends. Nobody can spend every single second of their day with their friends, try as they might, but with media they can. Media helps me spend more time with my friends and thus strengthens our friendships. Even if it isn’t face to face, telling a joke or story is the same, whether on Skype, in text or in person. On the other hand, I know that I don’t like it when my friend uses media instead of talking to me. For example, if I’m at a friend’s house, I didn’t go there to watch you spend an hour on Facebook changing your status, I came to hang out. Sadly, I am guilty of whipping out my phone to text while my friend’s telling a story, and that can only weaken our friendship.
    3) I found my day away from media quite hard, which shocked me. I figured that it would be easy-peasy, but it wasn’t. I didn’t get to listen to my music in the morning, or watch TV when I got home from school. To fill my time I read, painted and played with my puppy.
    4) No, I surprisingly had a harder time completing homework without media. I normally listen to the TV or music while working, and the backround noise helps keep me focused. When it gets too silent, I get easily distracted or bored. I’ll remember I didn’t make my bed or something and either use that excuse to leave or sit there and force myself to work, normally to no avail with that issue constantly hanging over my head.
    5) I was pretty successful at staying away from media, but when I first got home from school I turned on the TV out of habit, and watched a few minutes of it without noticing or remembering my day free of media. When I did remember, I turned it off and was pretty successful at staying away the rest of the day.
6)The withdraw from media was pretty tough. It wasn’t so much that I was bored, because on weekdays I really don’t watch too much TV, it was more of the fact that I couldn’t use media whenever I wanted that bothered me. Media has always been a ready thing. Whenever I wanted, I could use the internet or watch TV because it was always ready. But not having everything right at my fingertips made me feel disconnected. All that I can say is that I’m glad that media and I are finally back together.

  61. 1) After compleating the log I was struck by how much media I used in a single day. I used about seven hours of media between TV shows, Xbox, and many other electronic devises that I used during that day.
    2) I think it is affecting both my friends and me in many posotive and negative ways. It afffect us posotivly because we get to “hang out” more. Even though we are not face to face we are still talking and communicating in that fashion. It affects us negativly because our skills of a face to face interaction are starting to lack because people think whatever they say will never get traced back to them because they are hiding under a username or some fake identity.
    3) On that day were I stayed away from media I used board games and friends to get through the day. I called a friend and we met at the high school and played soccer most of the day.
    4) I found it alot easier to finish homework on the day without media becuase I was able to focus alot more and devote all of my attention to finsih one task and moving on to the next one. It was also easier because I was not flipping back and forth from Pandora to homework and by doing this I finshed homework faster and it was a lot more compleate.
    5) I was very succesful with the day without media up untill 6 o’clock when I went up to my bedroom and turned on the radio by mistake. But other than that ten second slip up I was able to stay medialess all day.
    6) The withdrawl from media made me feel happy about how much I have but at the same time it made me sad to think about all of the other kids in the world who just can’t go on the computer whenever they want or can’t do homework on the internet because their family can’t afford one. It made me think of how lucky I am and how much life would change without media.

  62. 1. After completing the time log I found out that I use media constantly. I figured out that I spend almost 6 hours using media, which included doing pointless stuff like going online, texting, watching TV, and listening to music.
    2. Well I can say that I do use media practically every waking minute, when I get up I check my phone, just because it has became a habit of mine. I am not so sure about my friends but I can guess that media is a big part of their lives as well. In my opinion this effects us negatively because media really takes away time to do activities, or do your homework. For example, some people come directly home and go online or start texting! This isn’t good because constantly being online with friends instead of being face to face can cause the friendship to fade.
    3. The day I stayed away from media was very challenging because I was constantly checking on my phone, but I wasn’t using it as much as usual. Not using media made me interact with my parents a lot more, and allowed me to be involved with what they were doing. It was definitely something that wasn’t easy but it was a good experience.
4.It really wasn’t a difference if I was using media or not on that day because my homework was completed at the same amount of time that it would be on any other regular day. I can say that I was more concentrated since I didn’t have so many distractions.
    5. To be honest I wasn’t that successful with staying away from media since I did check my phone once in a while, although I didn’t use it as often. Being with my family that day was a lot easier than just sitting at home, because I was more entertained.
    6. The withdrawal of media made me feel like I wasn’t a part of all the discussions, I felt left out. I really wanted to know what was happening. All in all, I thought that staying away from media would be impossible, but by the end of the day I was really proud of myself.

  63. 1. After adding up my timelog, I realized that i had spent about 10 hours using media! To be honest, I was quite surprised because i only feels like an hour or two.
    2. I think that this heavy usage can connect friends, but one must be weary that it does not interfere with work or school. too mush can lead to bad grades and time lost from family. One can also make new friends, through the use of social networks.
    3. When i stayed away from media, I noticed that I was able to get things done a lot faster. Without it lagging me down, I could do so much more.
    4. I was definitely more productive without media, and I fell that I did a better job on things. I read and wrote better than ever before.
    5. I was extremely successful at staying away from media, aside from my Dad’s music in the car I was totally media free. I read a book and napped the day away, mostly.
    6. My media withdrawal made me feel bored. On the plus side, I definitely got more sleep that I normally would have. That is a win for me at least.

  64. 1) After completing the time log i seemed to use media less then i have in the past. Now I am starting to go out a lot and longboard around town with my friends other then sitting at home on the computer or watching TV.
    2) I would say the social media is affecting my relationship with my friends positively by communicating a lot and by i guess i could better at spelling and reading because when you chat with somone else thats what your basically doing. It affects also though. It is very bad for our eyesight by looking at a computer screen or a cellphone screen. Also helping us get Arthritis in our hands when we text people or type. Finally cyber bullying, you can make a person very stressed from cyber bullying or even commit suicide.
    3) Well today i didnt use media except now and another time when i had to contact my parents but other then that it was like a normal day. I still have the rest of the day to go but im going out after this so it wont be so bad. All i did was hangout with my friends and ride around town.
    4) I was very successful i only used it twice so far so im doing good and im pretty sure ill be able to do it for the rest of the day.
    5) My withdrawal isnt yet over but im positive it will come out very successfully!

  65. Gali Z
    1. Using the timelog, i found that i spend 10 hours using media. Of course this is not how many hours of the day since i usually multitask. i will listen to music and surf the internet at the same time. Also i added 3 hours for texting time because it went on throughout the day so i could not measure the exact time.
    2. I think that the statement from the article is i little bit relevent to my life. I always have my phone with me because i am constantly texting my friends. I think that heavy media use has many pros and cons in my friends and mines lives. On the positive side, it gives us communication. Many people have sports and after school activities which conflict with their social lives. If you can’t hang out face to face, contecting over phones ipods or computers is the next best thing. Also the media gives us an outlet and inlet to the world. We share explore and interact through youtube, tumblr, twitter, etc. These sites give us information about todays world and the people in it, and also gives a way to showcase talents or hobbies. Another good thing is that it puts kids at the same ground level. The majority of my friends have phones and computers, and many have Facebooks. These different types of technology can give kids things to talk about. Did you hear about Facebooks new changes? Did you see Shane Dawsons new youtube video? The media creates endless oppurtunities for people to share and connect. Oh the other hand, media can cause many conflicts. Other than the fact that it can become addicting and lower grades and what not, the media is the reason for cyber bullying. With the ability to hide behind a fake name or remaining anonymous, kids are free to poke fun, dislike, or hate on other kids who normally they would never dare pick on. Another negative thing is that the media spreads rumours. Celebrity gossip or even school gossip can travel so much faster through email, texts, and chat messages. The speed of todays media and technology is a bittersweet thing.
    3. On the day i stayed away from media, I spent alot more time in silence. Both my sisters could use their computers, so they were cooped up in their room. My parents were both at work or doing things for work, so they were downstairs. I usually listen to music, and not hearing the notes of my favorite song, the buzz of a new text, or even the hum of the laptop, made me feel uncomfortable. Also i read alot. I do read normally, but i realized that if i have music playing or if i have my phone in my hand, i am distracted and i don’t read as much material, or as fast as i did on my no media day.
    4. There was no real change in the efficiency of doing my homework. I had swim the day of my media break, so i came home, did homework downstairs, then left for practice. When i came home i finished homework in my room. That is usually my routine on a normal Monday, so there was no change, other then the fact that i couldnt text a friend for help with an assignment or look up things on google.
    5. I would consider myself pretty sucessful at staying away from media. Of course i had to text/call my parents to let them i know i was home or whatever is was, but other than that i did not read or send any other texts, go on my computer (other than typing this blog), or listen to music.
    6. My withdrawal from the media made me feel a little isolated. There were a few times when i really wanted to tell a friend something or share news from school to an absent friend, but i resisted. Also at one point i was worried that something had happened to someone and i couldnt contact them, but i realized the chances of that happening are really slim. My withdrawal also made me realize how much the media affects my day. Sometimes if i go on Facebook and i see a peice of news or message a cmap friend i hhavent spoken to in a while, it make me a little happier. This no media say helped me appreciate what i have and i should not take the media for granted.

  66. 1. After completing the time log, I found that I had used about 12 hours of media. I actually didn’t think that I would have used more than 3-4 hours of media.
    2. This article is true to me, but heavy media doesn’t really affect me or my friends negatively but it does affect us positively. My friends and I get inside jokes and funny times when we use media by texting or emailing or chatting with each other. Also when doing my homework, I listen to music, because it helps me finish my homework better and faster.
    3. I played board games, cooked, went shopping and played outside with my friends.
    4. No I wasn’t more productive completing the homework on the day I stayed away from media was a very difficult task for me. I couldn’t listen to music while working so I worked on one problem for 1 to 1 ½ hours.
    5. I was pretty successful at staying away from media, except the one time where in the car ride to the mall and at the mall I heard and was listening to music.
    6. My withdrawal from media made me feel the same. It didn’t really change how I feel normally. It was extremely hard though to stay away from media. I had to restrain from watching TV and playing on my iPod and computer.

  67. 1. On a typical non-school day, I seem to spend about 6-7 hours using media. Most of this was through playing video games, while the only other use I employed on my time log day by watching Miracle on 34th Street. Unless researching for my French project counted as media, these examples were all that I did. I found however, that as long as I am doing something else, I could easily avoid media. While shopping, doing homework, etc., I was focused and occupied. Since my 4-5 hours of video games are restricted to only weekend days, I do not consider myself a heavy player. Television is only one of my entertainment options, therefore I could easily find a non-media activity to take up my time. As a result of this, I would consider myself, based on my hours and their conditions, to be an average media user.
    2. I do not believe that I spend every waking minute of my time with media, but I theorize that I still receive minor effects from media on my friendships and interactions with my friends. I merely need an activity or action to perform to become occupied and entertained. It does not matter if this is or is not a form of media. However, since media access is more convenient than interactions with friends, I sometimes feel enticed to enjoy media use instead of interact with my friends. On the flipside, media I enjoy with my friends provides options for interactions. (Partaking in it together, discussing it, etc.) Given this, it may be the only wise action to accept these effects and simply leave them as is, as long as there is any positive effect.
    3. Today, other than this homework, I found other things to take up the time. I attended my after-school activities, ate a snack, took a nap, spent more time with my family, and relaxed. Media use takes about the same amount of attention as work, so I enjoyed relaxing. Aside from directing my focus away from media, I hardly did anything unique.
    4. I did not find that I was more productive in my homework. In fact, I took about the same amount of time to complete it, while I spent more time procrastinating beforehand. As I stated before, I will do whatever I put my mind to. I do not multitask, so media never distracts me from homework. I believe it may be possible that the procrastination may have been due to the knowledge that I would not use media afterwards. I may keep a faster pace and begin my work sooner if I know that I will have more time for fun later. Since media accounts for quite a portion of my enjoyed activities, I predicted doing fewer activities to begin with. As a result, I had nothing to save time for and no reason to begin sooner.
    5. Aside from doing that which was for homework, I did not use any media that I am aware of. Having school, which spans over 7 ½ hours made this easier. Not only that, but the weekday prohibition of video games removed the most tempting use of media. Only on a weekend would I have found this a challenge.
    6. The withdrawal from media did not at all feel painful. All it did was make it more challenging to find a form of entertainment, or anything for that matter to keep me busy. As long as I was doing something, I was happy. This shows that although I use a fairly large amount of media, I am not addicted. This media-free day was very uneventful, but I must confess that I will appreciate media usage tomorrow.

  68. Media. One word that has affected many worldwide. After completing the timelog I have discovered that I spent more time using media then I realized. When doing homework and listening to the radio didn’t really pop out to me as using media. It just feels like a day-to-day activity that I always live with. Although I don’t notice how much I use media it is affecting my friends and I. Media could allow someone to become someone else, or to be yourself more. In media you could be more free and you can talk about things that are to awkward to mention in person. But that can also be used in a negative way. For example if you talk to someone a lot through media you may not talk to them in person because it would feel too weird. On the day I went without media I felt a bit bored because I didn’t know what to do. But I kept myself busy by hanging out with family so I wouldn’t be driven back to media. It was a good experience to try less media. I found on the day without media I was quicker at completely my homework because usually I’m listening to music. And the problem with this is if I hear a song come on that I love then I would stop my homework just to sing along!! On the day without media I was pretty successful I may have touched my cell phone once or twice but on that day I went to new York so I was to occupied with seeing different sites like the museum of natural history!! I think I did pretty well compared to the amount of media I usually use. My withdrawal from media made me feel a bit discounted from the world around me; I wasn’t as update on what was going on. I also felt like something was missing during my day. All in all, the media project as a whole help realize how much I use media. Who knows maybe I’ll even cut back on it a bit?

  69. Connor M

    1. After completing the time log I found that I used 7 hours and 40 minutes of media on Saturday. On normal day I may have spent a little less but I was with my friend and there were a lot of college football games going on.
    2. This type of media use is affecting the way I communicate and the way I spend time. Media would have a positive affect on me when I use it to talk to my friends and see if we can hang out, but since I use it so much I may not be getting the exercise I need when it is not a sport season.
    3. Well, instead of turning to the television or video games to pass time I read a book, worked on homework, and called a friend to see if they wanted to come over. When my friend was over we went up to the high school football field and played football.
    4. Yes, most of the time on the weekends when I have homework I procrastinate and only get it done last second but when I stayed away from media I did my homework right away and had time to have a friend over. I also studied for a test that I now feel I did very good on.
    5. At first it was easy to stay away from media because I could do the simple things like reading a book or doing homework. When I finished homework staying away from the media got harder because it is something I always use. I realized how dependent I am on media to get through the day.
    6. I felt fine about staying away from media. I thought being outside more and watching less television could only be good for me. I also felt better the next morning because instead of staying up late watching television I went to bed earlier and got a good night sleep.

  70. I found myself using media a lot, even though I was out for most of the day, I used my computer and my cell phone to make those plans! I believe that media has effected my friends and I more positively than negatively. Like I said before, media is very useful for planning things with my friends. It is probably the main source of our communication. Also we use Facebook a lot for communication and other things. Negatively, there was really no affect on us, but for other people fights can start through Facebook as well as through texting. For the day I stayed away from media I didn’t really have to change much because I had a Lacrosse tournament most of the day, so I was not home. I only had to stay away from my cellphone and then my t.v. and computer when I got home. Instead of using media I drew pictures in my drawing pad which I keep in my room, as well as doing homework. I found that I was much more productive in doing homework with out media. I had no distractions while doing my homework from the media, of course I had distractions from my sisters but none from my t.v., cell phone, or computer. I think I was pretty successful staying away from media for a day. I will admit that I may have answered 1 or 2 text messages but nothing more. After staying away from media for a day, I felt almost deprived of my social life…but not entirely because I was out playing lacrosse with my friends most of the day anyway. So overall it really was not that bad, but I wouldn’t choose to do it again!

  71. 1) After Completing the time log i found out that i really use media a lot more then i thought, by going on the computer, or watching t.v. and i always have music on in the backround of what ever im doing. I found out that in total i used 6 1/2 hours using media. Media sometimes can be helpful if i ever forgot to write down the homework i could check on the teacher webpage, or google or define something if i need to. You can also call a friend.
    2) I do agree with this artle that we spend every minute using media. And i think this can affect us postive and negitive. I think my friends are affected by media just as well as i am because when we hangout maybe one of us will be singing a song on the radio, and how we listen to music so much, or lines from a T.V. show or movie how that is an everyday thing for us. Also alot of my friends are texting consently. I think Media has Postives and Negtives to it such as It can really help you because there is almost a website for everything you do and you can ask questions online and almost everything. Also You can call someone if you need to talk to them instead of talking to them in person. And i do think our generation spends Mostly every minute on media with what ever were doing media has something to do with that. It has a negitive affect because most people now a days are spending more time on the computer or laying on the coach then outside playing soccer.
    3) What i did differntly on the day that i did not use Media is that i was alot more active then i usually am. I thought it was going to be alot harder then i thought, and i read magazines which i never have time to do anymore, and i just hungout with my friends all day and i never really checked my phone because it was eathier turned off or i had no communaction with anyone during the day because i was with alot of my friends. Also i went to bed earlier and i slept in earlier and it was nice to not like watch T.V. or go on facebook and just go on for like 45 minutes long.

    4) Yes i did, I was more productive doing my homework on my free media day because i stayed more on task, and it took me shorter then it usually does becuase i usually get very distracted when i do my homework and go on doing something else. And i really concentrated because i wasnt destracted by anything and i completed all my h0mework well.

    5) I thought i was very successful staying away from media because i found other things to do then just go on the computer and listen to music, i did stuff that i was waiting to do when i had more time. and i was outside more during the corse of the day.
    6) For my With draw with out media made me feel, very differnt because sometimes during the day i would get bored and just want to turn on my ipod and listen to music or go on the computer and go on facebook! But i thought it was a very differnt fun exprerience without media!

  72. After completing the time log, I found out that I have used a lot more media than I had originally thought. On November 26 I used close to seven hours of media. During that time I watched television, played X box 360, listened to my I Pod, and played games on my I Phone. I personally don’t think I spend every waking minute on some sort of media device. On the day that I stayed away from media I called a friend and went up to the high school and played soccer all day. All I did differently was just avoid media for that day by getting out of the house as early as possible and staying outside as long as I could. I found it was very easy to complete homework and do a good job on it because there were no distractions while I was doing homework. I was very successful at not using media on that one day except for a ten second laps were I was up in my bedroom and I turned on the radio forgetting about the media. But other than that ten seconds I was able to stay media free all day long. I felt happy and sad at the same time. I was happy that I was able to accomplish the task but it also made me think of all the children out in the world that don’t have media everyday and how much my daily life would be impacted.

  73. Faegan Peck :)

    1) I use way more media than I should. Practically my whole day was either on the computer, watching movies, or listening to music. It’s not helpful to be using the media this much, even if it’s fun. Its not productive and not improving on anything at all!
    2) This affects my friends and I in many ways. When we could be hanging out and talking in person, we text each other and do other things. This causes us to be awkward in person and when we do see each other, we want to be on the compute or watching TV or playing video games. Its very rare that we’ll actually go outside and get some fresh air.
    3) During the day that I didn’t use media, I managed to reread the Hunger Games, again, I spent time with my family, and I relaxed. I played outside with my little sister and was so busy that I barely even missed the media. I went to sleep earlier and slept in as well.
    4) I chose to do the day without media on one of the days off on the mini-weekend, so I didn’t have homework. If I did, I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on it because I can never concentrate on homework without music.
    5) I was successful at staying away. It wasn’t too hard because I was so distracted by spending quality time with my family.
    6) It felt good because it proved that I didn’t NEED the media 24/7 but it’s a nice benefit. I liked how much closer it brought me to my family.

  74. 1~ using the time chart, i found that i used 6 hours and 13 minutes of media on Sunday.
2~ as teenagers like me spend loads of time on the internet and using other media like Facebook or watching the TV, we have less time to associate with each other face to face. We have less time to have one on one conversation together. I Normally text and chat people a lot over Skype and Oovoo. One thing that we could benefit from that is more social interaction, but one thing negative that we would get out of that would be misunderstandings. My friends and I get upset of silly things that we chat sometimes meanwhile the things we get upset over are silly like interpreting a text message the wrong way.
3~ the day that I went media free was what felt like the longest day of my life. Between my family constantly talking about the video of hurricane Irene that my mom showed my sister, to little things like reaching for my iPod forgetfully and then realizing right before I would tap the screen and timidly putting back on my bed side table. I sat at home and read for a little while, and played outside. I also went to a friend’s house and we walked her dogs to distract me from media. It was hard to go home to my little sister playing with her iPod and my mom texting away. I’d walk into my bedroom and my phone would beep leaving me frustrated and wanting to open up the text message and respond.
4~ in my opinion, I was more productive on my media free day because there were fewer distractions. No music on in the background, TV blaring from the living room, or Facebook chats screaming my name. I even cleaned my room, and got my homework done before dinner!
5~ I was somewhat successful in staying media free. I spent the whole day without using any technology (besides in writers workshop class) when I finally cracked at 9:00 at night when I read a text message because I forgot about the project.
6~ being without media for a day was frustrating. And when I mean frustrating, I mean really frustrating! At first my day was going good, but then it started to rain so I no longer had the option to play outside (besides my soccer game). I guess in the end I’m proud I did it because it really showed me how media really does affect my life, and my families lives too.

  75. 1) After completing the time log I realized that I spend 7-9 hours on media. I think that it’s a lot of time to be spending using media but I was on a 2 hour car ride and there really isn’t much to do in the car but use your phone and listen to music.
    2) I honestly don’t think it really affects me, but I do think that kids our age need exercise. A negative to using media is that sometimes you’re too busy on it that you don’t have the effort to go outside anymore. I think it does have some advantages, it is said people who play video games have actually developed quick reflexes that have to do with the game they are playing. I do think kids should still get active and outside at least once a day though.
    3) They day I stayed away from media; it was hard because I usually have my phone everywhere I go. I ended up going outside and to the mall and find other way’s to deal without the use of my cell phone and other media.
    4) It surprised me but I did get through my homework a lot faster then I normally would. I always thought that having music in the background or the T.V turned on helped, but I guess not.
    5) It was hard for me to get through but I eventually made it. After words I felt proud that I accomplished something so hard for me to do, considering I have my phone with me everywhere.
    6) At first I was a little bit upset that I couldn’t use media, but eventually I didn’t know that I didn’t have anything and I just started going outside more often. I think it’s great to get off the phone and turn off the T.V and just get outside.

  76. 1. 8 hours and 40 minutes
    2. Yes, it seems it is true. I do not think that media is affecting me postivley or negativley, at least from what i can tell.
3.On the day without media I went to New York for my cousin’s naming at her parents temple for most of the day. After I left I slept for most of the day.
    4. I am not sure because I did not do any homework that day.
    5. I was succesful at staying away from media and the only time i used it was near 7:00 PM and I watched TV to about 9:30.
    6. My widthdrawl from media made me feel very bored for the rest of the day.

  77. -After completing the time long I figured out I use most of my time on the media. Every second of the day I’m on my phone. Every hour of the hour I’m on facebook. It’s ridiculouse seeing how much I use the internet, daily, non-stop. Everywhere I go the media is right besides me.
    - I feel that media has made a positive but also negative impact in my life. A negative impact the media has done ine my life is distract me from doing my homework. Everytime I’m on the computer doing my homework im also on facebook, shopping for clothes, and listening to music. Because I’m doing on these things at once, I don’t pay attention on getting my homework done and I lose track of time. When I get stuck on a promblem, I don’t focuse and start browsing the web. But on the other hand media has made a positive impact on my life such as making it easier to find a definition of a word on dictionary.com, or the media made it easier to find important information that I might need for a project. Media has made a heavy impact on my life in good and bad ways.
-On the day I did not have media access I decided to play outside. Instead of being home with my friends or just hom in general, I decideded to walk around town. I went to westfield with my friends and we did some activities there such as shop, watched a movie, and ate dinner. Instead of just being home on the computer, we took a walk around. And because we were with each other, we did not have to use our cell phones for anything. Our plan turned out just right.
-I personally think I was pretty successful being without the media. It did kill me that I wasn’t able to use my phone because my phones my baby and I use it all the time. Being without the media wasn’t so bad. I tried my best to stay away from any media and I think it worked. Besides watching a movie, I think I did a good job having no media for a day because I got to realize how people felt without the media in the olden days. And I’m glad to say that I leave in the modern times because I don’t know what I’ll do without the media.

  79. 1.) After completing the time log I’ve found that I spend most of my day using some sort of media. Even though it was Thanksgiving I still spent a lot of my time on my phone and on facebook.
2.)The media is affecting me and my friends by giving us more sources of communication. Without cell phones me and my friends would have a harder time getting together and making plans. Cell phones help us communicate with eachother along with facebook. Media affects us negatively because to much can harm how we do in school and our additudes.
3).The day i stayed away from media I tryed my best not to use my cell phone or go on facebook. I had to call my friends to make plans but that was it. After that i totally shut down my phone and didn’t use it again until I had to get in touch with my parents.
4.)On the day I stayed away from media I found doing my homwork was much easier and it went by faster. I didn’t have any facebook open or cell phone to distract me.
5.) I was quite successful with staying away from media. The only time I used media waswhen I had to call my friends. Then, I listened to the radio in the car but that was it!
6.) My withdrawal from media made me feel disconnected with the world. Facebook keeps me intouch with everyone and everything and without it I felt like I didnt know what was going on with the rest of the world.

  80. After i completed my timelog i was amazed about how much time i spent using media. It was around 5 hours give or take a few minutes. I dont spend every moment out of school using media but i think it would impact anyone who does negitivley. The day i spent without media i did alot of things that i normally wouldn’t do. I spent alot of time doing chores and things like that. I also went out with my friends for a few hours. i actually didn’t do my homework on the day i stayed away from media. Sadly it didnt occur to me that i should do my homework on a day that i had nothing to do. I think i did a pretty good job at staying away from media even though at about 11 that night my efforts were destroyed by a great movie coming on when my sister was watching tv. Durin the length of the day i was extremley bored and did not know what to do with myself.

  81. 1: After recording how much media I used, I found that I didn’t use that much but maybe could have used a little less. Most of the day I watched TV, listened to music, went on the computer, slept, and also hung out with my friends. On that day that I recorded my use of media, most of the day was spent sleeping, or hanging with my friends. So the only time I got to use media was very limited.

2: How I think media is affecting my friends and I positively is in a lot of ways. I believe that using media is another way of interacting with people which you may not talk to that often. I find it in a way to learn educational things besides going on social networking sites. People can use the internet for more than one thing. They can use it to look up information, or simply to look up things they are confused about. Although media has a positive side, it very much has a negative one. Not only does media distract kids from what they need to do but, it can cause lower grades, and behavior problems. If media is over used by kids then it can really effect what is important in life. In that case, school should come before being on the computer or texting on your IPhone.

    A. 3: I did a lot of things differently the day I stayed away from media. I didn’t text that much, didn’t use the computer, didn’t watch TV, and didn’t listen to music. I felt that it was a lot easier to get my homework done when I stayed away from media. I felt that if I wasn’t distracted by something, I could get what needed to be done, done. I was able to get my homework done a lot faster and much better than usual. I was sort of successful staying away from media. Eventually, I gave in and had to use my phone much more then I was. I found it really hard not be able to text my friends when I wanted too. My withdrawal from media made me realize a lot of things. It made me realize that I might just use media a little more then I need too. It made me very much realize that I can’t go more than a day without going on the computer at least once, or texting on my phone.

  82. 1. After completing the time log i found that i spend way more time using the media than i thought!
    2. Being on the computer for so many hours affects us negatively by looking at the computer screen can hurt and strain your eyes. but it can affect you positively by having you learn new things or becoming more creative.
    3. The day i stayed away from media i hung out with my friends at the park and went shopping. it was pretty boring honestly.
    4. Even without media to stop me from doing homework it was still the same, i found ways to avoid doing it. but i guess it was a little easier doing my homework.
    5. Being away from anything media was really hard. if i’m not on the internet then i’m watching a movie and if i’m not doing those things then i’m reading. but not being able to do any of those wasn’t easy.
    6. Being away from media was boring because that’s how i spend my day even when i’m with my friends unless were outside or shopping. but since its getting cold out we cant really stay outside for very long.

  83. 1.After completing the timelog I found that i used media about 5 or 6 hours a day and it had really surprised me when we did this experiment.
2.Media use is affecting me or myfriends — both positively and negatively because it does kill our brain cells but it helps positively because we use it for homework or to study for a quiz or test.
3.What I did differently on the day I stayed away from media was go outside and soak up the sun or even cleaned up a little so it was not such a big mess.
4.I did find it more productive completing homework on the day I stayed away from media because it was easier and it helped you remeber it while it was still fresh in your mind
5.How successful i was in trying to avoid media for a day was actually possible. I did acheive my goal and did not use unless i really needed to use like for class or needed to be picked up from school.
My “withdrawal” from media made me feel like i was a good acheiver in my goals and that i can reach those goals if i just tried.

  84. 1) After spending a day without media I spent a total of 600 minutes or 10 hours using media. I thought this was surprising because usually it does not feel like 10 hours of my day I spend using technology.
    2) I don’t feel litterly like every minute we are online or using technology. Don’t get me wrong I do think it effects everyone including me greatly. Most of our generation is on using face book or tumblr, etc. but I also am active and healthy. I am not a lazy bum sitting on the couch watching TV and on face book every single minute. I am active, doing sports hanging out with my friends, taking runs! I think being online is a good way to keep in touch with your friends and family.
    3) The day I chose to be not in touch with media was on thanksgiving. On thanksgiving I talked with family and ate a whole lot! I was distracted by the little monsters I call my cousins. On that day I made a play up! I was glad I wasn’t using my phone and instead playing with my family. It was a good break!
    4) I didn’t do homework on thanksgiving because I was not staying at my home. But I can tell you that on nights where I do use media, it’s very hard to complete my homework because of all the distractions. When I’m on the computer especially I am always tempted to check social network sites.
    5) Luckily I was very successful about not using media. Although I did text a few people for only a few minutes. I thought it was going to be hard to not have face book, and things. I am glad I did it on thanksgiving because I have heard from my friends it was very hard and boring to just find something else to do. I can relate because when I get my phone and my iPod taken away its hard to just sit there and find something other to do. My family was a big distraction and I had fun making my play which was very good!
    6) My withdrawal from media made me feel worried, yet relived. Worried because I felt like I was missing out on things that were happening. I felt as if something bad was going to happen and I couldn’t be there to see it all go down. But I also was relived. Relived to find out how easy it was for me to go a day without media. Sometimes however it is hard with nothing else going on and nothing to do. Easy though when you have things to do other than face book and tumblr.

  85. Chloe C.
1 After completing the time log I found that I only used approximately 3-4 hours of media. Music was a main factor. During the day we put on Christmas music which was on for a while. Also while at church, which is around 3 hours, though I did not use media the entire time, just for bible readings and hymn singing. (If that counts as media)

2 I think heavy use of media has a more negative effect on kids at least, but also a bit of a positive effect as well. Negative effects are use of slang, faster spreading of destructive gossip, obsession with social networking such as Facebook, Twitter and a newer network Tumblr. They stay up late posting pictures and statuses when they could be sleeping or improving their grade with study and completing homework. Positively media can help get important news out to kids. For example, before the bell the morning Osama Bin Laden was killed you heard kids talking about the breaking news.

3-6 During my non media day I found that I wasn’t on the computer looking at the silly tabloidesque stories on my computer homepage was different. I practiced more on an important piano piece and I began to deal with some things that need to be done soon, like a UCVTS application. I did not find that I was more productive with my homework. On weekdays my challenge is to stop reading and since we could “recreationally” read, it was still a bit of a problem. I was on was fairly successful from staying away from media. Radio my family usually has on was mostly background and save for a some glances and slipups at the computer I stayed, away. My withdrawal made me feel the same if not a little bit better about myself, because I wasn’t thinking about what was happening with Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore.

  86. Watching TV for two and a half hours? That’s 10 percent of a day using media (waking and non-waking hours). Don’t know if I would characterize that as successful — couldn’t you have hung in there a little longer, Dylan?

  87. It is so surprising that it is scary. After counting the hours I spent on media i was sacred and officially I spent 8-9 hours a day on the Internet. Now that I think about it on some days I do more than that. No wonder my parents want to deduct time from me being on the Internet.
I don’t think that the phrase ” Every waking minute using media” applies to me. First of all, my parents are parents that never want me to do anything with media. SO they take media away. They take away my electronics. It hasn’t damaged any relationships YET. I hope it never does.I would say that the media affects me positively and negatively. It can help me know what the trend is and help me find information quickly. On the other hand, too much media can definitely make my eyesight worse.
On the day I didn’t use media I did many things differently. For instance, I didn’t go home right after school. Instead I went to the restaurant to do my homework( and I forgot my keys.) And I basically stayed there for the whole day until around 8. This prevented me from watching any T.V. or touching and media. In the morning I usually walk with earplugs on when I couldn’t do that I got bored.
I think that it was successful. I somehow managed without media. But during the night I had the urge to just take my phone and listen to music. Then I realized that I couldn’t. During the night it was very painful, but I did succeed. After all no pain no gain.
This made me feel proud of myself. Also it made me realize that can’t live without my phone or the Internet. This experience made me wonder how my parents lived without media or anything of that sort. This exercise made me respect adults more too.

  88. 1. After I completed my timelog I found that I used around 5 hours and 20 minutes of media. This amount of time didn’t surprise me that much. I knew that I was average on my media usage, but didn’t realize that things I would do daily, (like listening to music), counts as media usage. This number may be a little bit higher, for I texted on and off throughout the entire day.
    2. Using media has both a positive and negative effect on me. I think it could be positive because I can stay in touch easily. Texting to friends that moved away or texting to find a homework assignment really benefits me. However, sometimes I find myself cooped up inside and not enjoying the beautiful day outside. This negatively affects me, for fresh air is always a good thing and our youth is missing out on it.
    3. On the day I didn’t use media I found myself becoming bored with myself. Not being able to text my friends was hard, so I went to bed earlier and interacted with my family more. I usually wouldn’t be doing something quiet such as reading, but on this day I did some of those things. This day felt like something was missing from it, and I feel as though I would have been overall happier if I had used media.
    4. On the day without media, I was for the most part successful from staying away. However, I got a few texts from my friends and it was hard for me not to respond back because that would seem rude. Also, the T.V was very intriguing because my family members were watching it and I could not.
    5. My withdrawal from media made me feel incomplete and bored. I wished that I could get in touch or play a video game. At one point in the day I was literally pacing from being so bored. It also made me feel disconnected from the world because I wasn’t able to go on the Internet or my phone.

  89. I’m sorry that you misunderstood the assignment. You had to stay away from electronic media — I allowed reading books, magazines, newspapers, etc.

  90. After completing the time log, I added up all my time and it came to a surprising 7 hours and 20 minutes. The amount of media I used, although shocking just to see it played out, I kind of anticipated. I’m a tech-savvy person, what can I say?

However, because I enjoy the entertainment of media so much, it tends to draw me away from what I should be doing, which are things such as homework. In the end, I always hand everything in, but the smaller amount of time I allow myself by procrastinating just leaves me with more stress and less sleep. On the plus side, medias such as Facebook keep me up to date with what my friends are doing, music on my iPod sparks my imagination, and my favorite TV shows give me something to look forward to every week. Thankfully, I do not feel that my media use affects my friendships, actually quite the opposite. It gives me another way to stay connected.

On the day I didn’t use media I did many things differently. For instance, I didn’t watch TV when I came home from school, I didn’t listen to my iPod while doing homework, and I didn’t check my Facebook or go on YouTube while using the computer. Did I find that I was more productive completing homework? No doubt. Since I had nothing else to do, I found that I was more able to focus on my homework and get it done efficiently.

Although I tried my best to stay away from media, I did listen to my iPod on my way to and from school. I also watched TV for a half an hour while cutting my French flashcards out, so technically I was being productive in that case, but still. At the most part, I promised myself I wouldn’t indulge in any media that would get in the way of my priorities, and I’m exceedingly proud of how I made it through. My withdrawal from media, I found, left me feeling so much more accomplished and quite plainly, awake. Just going on the computer now to type this blog has started to make me feel drained and spacey. Without media, I felt more sharp and aware, more in the zone. Typical distractions we use now a days tend to leave us sluggish and dazed, from hours of staring at a screen. The change was, quite simply, refreshing.

(Note: All questions are answered, I just wanted to put it in more of an essay form)

  91. Sorry I forgot one question…

    6. I felt that I was much more successful completing homework on the day without media. Usually I push off homework until close to night, but that day I completed it early on in the day because I had nothing to do. Also, I feel like my homework quality was better because I wasn’t distracted by music I usually have playing in my ears.

  92. After completing the timelog, i noticed that i used media ALL DAY! I tracked it on Friday, the 25, on Black friday. I did a little shopping and even then I was on my phone! I watched a movie, some tv, and went on the computer. i went out with friends but i noticed i used a lot of media.
The article that i read talking about my youth spend “practically every waking minute” when not in school using a cellphone, computer, television, and other device. If this is true, i think it’s affecting me, my friends, and my family good and badly. Some pros of us being able to access media very easily are that we can keep in touch with friends and family on social networking sites. I know that I LOVE being able to keep in contact with my camp friends, cousins and family with just a click of a mouse. Facebook helps me keep in touch with people i may or may not see very often. Facebook can also have negative affects. Some people, and I may be a bit guilty myself, are on Facebook all the time. I like to be on it, but it has the capability of consuming ones life. Also, I really like watching the news, and celebrity gossip shows. Some things are helpful to teach young minds, but others brainwash them. For example, magazines, celebrity gossip shows, a lot of the times, are false. They brainwash teenage girls by putting unrealistic photos of skinny, airbrushed, “fake” girls. They are not role models because a lot of girls look up to that and think they have to be like that. Also, kids loose so much sleep on the computer each night, effecting them to have lower grade scores, less focus in class, and so many more. To me, there are more negative effects than positive effects on media these days.
I did many different things on the day I stayed away from media. I read my whole book, tried (and failed) at finishing a Rubik’s cube, and I went outside. I hung out with my friends and noticed that I didn’t need my phone or computer to have fun! I used my time productively.
I’m not going to lie, I was not that much more productive with my homework. I know this is a bad habit, but I need to listen to music to concentrate. I am trying to break that habit, but for now, I prefer listening to my music while doing my homework.
I felt I was very successful at staying away from media because I wasn’t home. If I was home, maybe I would be tempted to check my phone or check my Facebook. I kept myself busy and after a while, I forgot about it! Honestly, I didn’t really even miss it. I was happy I did it. I feel it was not much of a struggle. (Especially because I spent 1 week without it in the summer because of camp and the week of Hurricane Irene when I didn’t have power at all!)
My withdraw from media was much of a withdraw at all! I didn’t need media to keep me busy. I learned that There are so many other things you can do instead of sit in your room all day on the computer and with the television on in the back round! I’m happy I did it because now I can appreciate more things in life!!

  93. Whose Ashton Kutcher and Demi Mooore?? jk

  94. 1. After completing the timeline, I found that I used between six and seven hours of media. That astounded me. First of all, on that Saturday I had woken up at 9 and went to bed at 11, meaning that I was awake for 14 hours. Therefore, I spent almost half my time awake with media.
    2. This is not true of me. I don’t spend all my time using media, like the author suggests. However, media use still definitely affects me and my friends. A positive way is that way is that we all communicate quicker. People can easily text or (gasp!) call someone, and arrange to hang out, or just have a conversation. A negative is that I’ve noticed that we sometimes focus too much on using media, and not enough on actually doing stuff together. It’s always annoying when a friend spends too much time texting. So while bettering communication in some ways, it can ruin it in others.
    3. Something that I did differently on the day without media was that I engaged in more physical activity. I played in a soccer game, had a game of football with some friends, and practiced lacrosse. I would not have done all of these on an average Saturday.
    4. I found that I was more productive doing homework without media. That is because the only homework I had was not to use that very same media, which I couldn’t have done if I had used it.
    5. I was completely successful at not using media, although I did nearly forget about books being included. I have had a “no media day” forced upon me before, but on those I usually read and exercise. I almost started a book, but I remembered just in time.
    6. My withdrawal from media made me feel surprised at how much I depend on it. From entertainment and communication, to learning new things, we get so much from it. I also felt proud that I had actually done it. I had gone from 7 hours one day, to zero the next.

  95. 1.) I found that i use alot of time in fact i use more thn 12 hours of media which likely i thought would be the average amount. Little things such as texting, facebook, reading magazines took away most of your time and you don’t realize that it does.
2.)I think media affects my friends and i because we always text each other since we really have nothing important to do and we like listening to music and wa tching television so you get overwelmed with media,But sometimes the media is used in a good way. For instance, if you have a school project you may have to contact a friend (if you are working in a group) on when to finish the project.
3.) On the day without media i was literally dying of boredome. I basically slept the whole day because there was really nothing to do. I usually watch tv, listen to music, text, and go on facebook but, since i had none of that i ate ice cream and slept for about 5 hours.I never want to try it again!
4.) In my honest opinion i think it is easier for me to cocentrate with music or noise in general in the background because it helps me stay on my work for some odd reason. If it is absolutely quiet it starts freaking me out because you start thinking about scary stuff like in scary movies.
5.) In honesty, i failed the staying away from media. I lasted for about 5 hours but i just could not stand the boredome and i gave up on it. I mean 5 hours isn’t bad but it is pretty pathetic. I just was sick of hearing the tv’s and music and media and knowing that i can’t do any of that stuff made me upset. So i gave up on the challenge it was too difficult for me.
6.) This withdrawal from media made me feel so bored. I never have felt so bored ever. It was very difficult as my normal routine is all media, but if you want to do this as another experiment count me out.

  96. 1. After completing the time log I found that I use media for only 2 hours. I spend another hour watching TV at night, but the log did not go until that time. I think that this is reasonable because that means all of my other time is spent doing productive things.
    2. I myself do not spend “every waking minute” using media but I imagine that if I did it would negatively affect my friends and family. Sometimes though someone will be talking to me and I will look at my phone to check messages when I should be paying attention to what they are saying. With my friends that are on the other team I find that I text them more often than I talk to them in person because I don’t get to see them that much. Positive effects of the media are that it can help with homework as long as you stay focused and it helps you stay in touch with people you do not get to see often.
    3. My day of no media was not that different from regular days. I am so busy after school with swimming that I don’t have much time for TV or to go on the internet after school in the first place. The one major difference was that I could not answer my phone whenever I got a text or call. I also ended up going to bed earlier because I didn’t stay up and watch TV at night. When I did have a little time left over I read a book to keep busy.
    4. I did find that I was more productive when I was doing homework because I was not getting distracted my texts or the music that I was listening to. I found that the homework took a lot less time when I was not multitasking and I got done early.
    5. I would say I was very successful at staying away from media. I did not listen to music or use my phone very much. The only times I did it was to contact my parents to pick me up from swimming. I also gave in when my family was going to watch a movie at night. I didn’t want to be the only one not watching it so I stayed.
    6. My “withdraw” from the media made me feel successful. It did get a little boring when I couldn’t find something to do though. I think this assignment would have been easier if it was in the spring or summer when you can go outside or ride your bike. In the cold weather and having it get dark so fast you had to find something to do inside. The experience made me realize the amount of media I used. I was using media without realizing how much I was actually using it.

  97. Five hours??!! Sounds like you did not try as hard as you could have. Maybe next time look for a change of scenery. I thank you for at least being honest.

  98. 1.) After completing the timelog, I found that I was using a decent amount of media each day. I did not use a lot of media because of swimming, but I was able to text and watch TV a little bit. Luckily, the time I spent not using media went to productive activities such as homework and studying.
2.) I myself am not really affected majorly by media, but some of my friends are. At times, they say they were up all not playing video games, or texting people. This affected them when they had a test or quiz the day after they were up late, so their grades weren’t as good as they usually were. I play video games, and text friends, but I limit myself so it doesn’t hurt me in the future.
3.) The day I stayed away from media affected me, but not a lot. I wasm’t used to not checking my phone for messages, or watching TV after swim practice. However, I found other activities to do such as reading books and magazines, and going outside. Swimming also took up a big chunk of my day, so i wasn’t able to do anything during that time.
4.) I found that on the day I didn’t use media, I was much more productive than the days I would text my friends, or watch TV. Instead of going on the computer, I read, and instead of TV, I raked the front yard. Without the media to distract and hamper me, I was able to work on and complete many more things than I would have on a normal media day.
5.) I was very successful at staying away from media on the day that I picked. For me, media is important, but my whole life doesn’t revolve around it. With books to read, and other household jobs to do, I was kept away from media the whole day. Maybe once or twice I checked my phone for messages, but mI didn’t respond to any to keep my non-media streek going.
6.)The withdrawal from media affected me, but not a whole lot. With swimming taking up most of my day, and household chores that needed to be taken care of, I was successful in keeping myself away from media. It was hard not to turn on the TV, or check the computer, but I managed to occupy myself with other things the rest of the day.

  99. 1.) I found that I spent a lot of time using media, almost 7 hours! When I could have been doing other productive things, I was online or watching TV or texting friends. I realized how much I thought about media, and how much it affects me.
2.) Positively, it affects me because I can know homework, and what’s going on most of the time, or important news. I find out current events through the TV or internet. I make plans with friends online. Negatively it could affect us because there is unfortunately cyber bullying, and also it can preclude us from doing homework or projects.
3.) On the day I didn’t use media, I read my book, I hung out with friends, and I thought about how much I used media and how much I depend on it.
4.) I found that I was very productive on the day I didn’t use the internet, or my cell phone. I finished homework earlier and I had more time to hang out with friends.
5.) I was successful, but when I saw my friends texting me on my phone I felt like I needed to answer. It’s like an impulse. I felt bad that I felt like I needed to answer, but I was so used to that I couldn’t help it!
6.) The withdrawal made me feel too dependent on media, and maybe I should try to go another day without internet or my cell-phone on me all the time. Media affects me very much, it’s a big part of my life.

  100. 1. After doing the time log I saw that I used the media about 5-6 hours this really surprised me because I did not know I used that much media everyday.
    2. I think media use is heavily affecting me or my friends both positively and negatively. I think it affects me or my friends positively because if I need to do homework and I need to do research I could use the media such as internet, or T.V. Also if I want to talk to a friend I don’t have any classes with I could text them or chat them on face book. I think it could affect us negatively because if we use it to much we might not do are homework or study for test.
    3. Something’s that I did differently on the day I stayed away from the media are I went outside, my dad taught me how I play the guitar, and I hung out with friends.
    4. I did find that I was more productive in completing homework on the day I stayed away from the media because I kept myself focus and I found that more of my answers are right when I don’t listen to music while doing homework.
    5. I was very successful at staying away from the media because I did not use any media until the next day. I also noticed almost everything uses media.
    6. At 1st I felt so weird without media then I got used to it and I found that you can do other things that don’t have media.

  101. Anonymous, I need your first name and last initial so that I know who to give credit to.

  102. 1. After completing the time blog I found I used about 6 to 7 hours of media in total. I did not expect it to be that much.

    2. I think the big use of media is positive because we can learn more about what is going on in the world. I think it is negative because people get cyber bullied and some things are inappropriate for our age group.

3.What I did differently on my day without media was just not go on the computer ,text, or watch TV its wasn’t really that big of a difference compared to a normal day .I did this on thanksgiving so I mostly just spent time with my family.

    4. Yes, I did my homework more productively because there were fewer things to distracting me from doing my work.

    5. I was very successful from staying away from media. It was a little hard when I wanted to watch TV but otherwise I was very successful.

    6. My “withdraw” from media made my day feel a little strange. Also at night it was silent since I had no TV. But I think that media makes life a little better.

  103. Throughout this media project I have developed a new prespective of how we use media today. For example, while I filled out the time log I found that I use media a lot more than I expected. After looking back on the day and watching what I thought to be a normal day seemed to look like a media crazy day. I found that I use media for the majority of the day which is exactly 8:28 not including the 23 texts that I sent during the course of the day.
However, like the corresponding article suggests I don’t spend every waking minute online. Even though I consume media 8:28 on the day in which I watched two football games, I was surprised how much I was offline and not consuming media that was not related to watching football. Subtracting the 6 hours I spent watching football, I only was consuming media for 1:20 again adding the 23 texts. These statistics show that I don;t spend every waking minute using media during most days.
This brings me to the day I dedicated to not using media. On this day I planned ahead and went to play football with friends at a certain time so we wouldn’t have to text each other and use media on the day without it. Throughout this day I did a number of things with my friends like play football and ride bikes. Even though it was difficult to complete this task it felt like a breath of fresh air and made me feel more natural and less like a robot that texts and goes on Facebook most days. I was mostly successful from staying away from media. I was completely successful until my dad had me look up the time until christmas on my phone to assist set up our decorations up. However, I believe that I was successful to stay away from media the best I could.
This withdrawal from media made me feel very good and look back to my parent’s childhood when they didn’t have access to the media that our generation does. I felt proud that I was able to accomplish this. I believed that I wouldn’t be able to but I was able to prove myself wrong and learn a very important lesson from this experience.

  104. 1) After the time log I must say, wow, I use a lot more media then I thought I would have. The main source of media was my cell phone. I had sent a total of at least 500 texts, a day! I also would use my phone for YouTube, Facebook, and other miscellaneous web browsing. I would spend a total of at least two to three hours a day on my cell phone alone! I also would watch a very small amount of TV. The crazy thing is, I am extremely active and only would use these devices late at night.
    2) I don’t use my media every walking minute. I use it very little bits and it all adds up to a large total. I play a good amount of sports and train a lot, as well as hanging out and biking. I am fit yet I can still get in about four hours of media use a day, it’s funny.
    3) On the day I stayed away from media I did actually nothing differently. I had made plans earlier the day before to hang out with friends, so I wouldn’t have to use my cellphone to call them. I just biked around, chilled at the hs, and went to Quick Check, not really much. It got hard as I went into the nightfall though. I usually listen to music or watch TV or text, but I couldn’t do any of those things so I just worked on homework and sat around and talked.
    4) I did finish my homework quickly and a tad bit more detailed, but not really a huge difference. I usually listen to music when I do homework because it helps me focus, so I was kind of having trouble with that. It was a cool experience though.
    5) I have to admit, I did cheat once. I checked my Facebook, but that’s it. It was a challenge for me, but I coped.
    6) The overall withdrawal was hard, but I coped. I had to try really hard to not just pick up my phone and start texting. I decided to just turn it off and that kept me from using it.

  105. A day without social media…in a nutshell, I’d call it the hardest day of my life. After being astounded by the results of the Kaiser study, I decided to test myself; to see if the results were accurate, and to see just how gruesome those 24 hours would be. I woke up around 7 or 8 on Friday, the time I usually wake up, and did something that I almost never do; ate breakfast. While I never eat breakfast during the week (I simply don’t have time to), I sometimes eat on the weekends. What made Friday so special, however, was the fact that I ate breakfast at 8:30! I realized that usually I’m so caught up in video games, or watching TV, or checking my FaceBook that I don’t get around to eating until around 11:30! Since my grandparents and brother didn’t want to be supportive (none of them had abstained from social media for the day) I ended up locked away in the guest bedroom (the only room in the house with no TV or computer). It felt so quiet, as if the entire world had stopped moving. With nothing too do, I devoured two novels that I had brought along as a backup, something pro re nata. I found myself staring at the roof, bored out of my mind. At this point, I truly realized the effect that social media has on me (and my generation). In a way, it’s a drug; the more you use it, the more you want to keep using it. And when you stop, you feel incomplete, even craving the world of technology that you left. If I learned any lesson from this experience, it’s that the same way someone has to be careful how much of an addictive substance they consume, people everywhere need to be conscious of how much social media they consume.

  106. Pro re nata?! Awesome!

  107. 1) After completing my media timelog, I found that I used media for about an hour and twenty minutes. This didn’t really surprise me, since I know I don’t use media that much anyway. At most I spend 3 hours on media, and even then that rarely ever happens. I mainly use media for playing games, because I don’t have a cell phone and I don’t listen to music a lot. I looked at some other posts, however, and I was surprised to not find many people using little media.
    2) I don’t spend a lot of time using media, so it doesn’t affect me or my friends that much. Some of my friends use media a lot, but it doesn’t affect me in any way since I usually see them mainly in school. The only thing I can think of on how it affects me is that it occasionally gives me inspiration for something to draw, but other than the amount of time I spend using media, it doesn’t affect me that much.
    3) On the day I stayed away from media, I spent more time doing things like drawing or building with LEGOs. I didn’t do much differently than on a regular day because I only use media for entertainment or e-mail. Because e-mail is a slower communication form than texting, I didn’t feel cut off from my friends.
    4) I don’t think I was more productive completing homework the day I went without media. My parents set limits for using electronics such as video games or computers anyway, so I have to ask to use them. I always have time to finish my homework on days with media, so I completed homework with the same productivity.
    5) I was fully successful in staying away from media. I act in a play on the weekend anyway, and the theater is an hour away from my house. I pretty much spend a third of my day away from my house on weekends, and I don’t use media there. As for when I was at home, I just drew pictures or played with LEGOs. I didn’t have to use any media that day.
    6) My withdrawal from media didn’t make me feel any different than on a day with media. I felt bored sometimes, but I feel that way on regular days as well. When I did feel bored, I just did something fun without using media. Therefore, I didn’t feel different when I went without media.

P.S. The reason I posted it today is because I had a stomach virus yesterday. I was really nauseas, had a horrendous headache, and I was incredibly sick to my stomach. I couldn’t even eat dinner; much less write a blog post. I felt better today, which is why I posted it now.

  108. After completing the timelog, I found that I spent about 6-7 hours using media. I was very surprised by this because I thought I used more! That day I was raking leaves for about 2-3 hours, though, so that took up a lot of my time.
Media definitely has a large impact on my life, both positively and negatively. While going on facebook and checking emails too much is not a good thing, I find that music is a very positive part of my life. While some lyrics in current music can have bad messages, my Mom has always told us “If the lyrics are bad, just listen to the music”. Music has never impacted a right or wrong decision I’ve made, its just always been there for me to listen to whether I’m in a good or bad mood.
On my media-free day, I found myself finishing my homework quicker and putting more thought into my answers. By staying off the computer, I found I could focus better on more important things like my homework and my family/friends. I also forced my self to use a REAL dictionary and a REAL calculator instead of an online one, which helped me to avoid media sites.
I was almost completely successful in my non-media day. Unfortunately, as soon as I walked through the door when I came back from school I turned on the radio. Force of habit, I guess!
I feel really refreshed after having this media-free day. It was a lot easier then I expected to stay off of social networking websites. Its showed me that I can restrict myself everyday and, just like its a habit for me to go online a lot now, it can become a habit for me NOT to go online.
